All-Time Rivals Face-off

The Accord vs. Camry matchup will go down in automotive history as one of the all-time great competitions. These two midsize sedans have been going at it for more than 40 years now and are two of the last family sedans standing in the wake of the SUV Era.

The 2024 Honda Accord is part of the 11th-generation lineup that debuted last year. It is now a hybrid-heavy sedan that sees the discontinuation of the potent turbo engine from the last generation Accord. As a result of being all-new last year, the Accord cruises into this model year with exactly zero updates.

The 2024 Toyota Camry is also largely unchanged aside from Amazon Alexa being deleted from the content roster. However, that is mostly because an all-new 9th-generation lineup is set to arrive next year.

Both sedans are just over 16 feet long, seat 5, and are household names. However, the Camry has been the #1 selling midsize sedan for more than 2 decades and is something of an 800-pound gorilla in the car game. But does its older platform have what it takes to fend off the fresh 11th-gen Accord? Let’s find out.

Specs

In base LX and EX trim, the 2024 Honda Accord features a 1.5L turbocharged inline-4 making 192 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. From there on up, all Accords are powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder hybrid setup rated for 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. In either case, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) routes power to the front wheels only as there is no option for all-wheel drive (AWD).

Toyota fits its base 2024 Camrys with a naturally aspirated 2.5L four-pot good for 202 hp and 182 torques. Hybrid variants take that powertrain and add a small battery pack and electric motor, which boosts output a hair to 208 hp. Finally, there is a burly 3.5L V6 option with 310 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. Hybrid Camrys use a CVT versus a traditional 8-speed automatic with the other powertrains and AWD is available.

Fuel economy figures are close in this Accord vs. Camry comparison. Both cars are rated for 32 mpg combined in base setup, though the Camry’s figures drop to 28 with AWD. An Accord hybrid can manage 48 mpg combined, but a hybrid Camry offers up to 52. In both cases, these figures drop for models with larger wheels. V6-powered Camrys predictably fare the worst here with a 26-mpg combined fuel efficiency rating.

Driving and Performance

Both the 2024 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry ride on a fully independent suspension. Honda’s party trick is the Motion Management System found on hybrid Accords. This system can tweak the steering, engine, and brakes to shift the vehicle load forward and backward, as needed, to help tighten up cornering.

But only the Camry has an aggressive handling variant in the TRD trim level. This model, which comes standard with the V6, has larger front brakes, beefier underbody bracing, a track-tuned suspension, and Active Cornering Assist, the latter of which can brake individual wheels to help with cornering.

If it’s speed you’re after, the Camry TRD is the quickest option here with a 0-60 mph time of 5.6 seconds. The same publication clocked non-hybrid Camrys at 7.6 seconds for this test and the non-hybrid Accord at 7.3 seconds. However, the hybrid Accord steps things up with a 6.5-second sprint to 60 mph.

Comfort and Interior

Though the 2024 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are closely matched in overall length and width, the Accord handily bests the Camry in both back seat legroom – 41 inches vs 38 – and trunk volume – 17 cubic feet versus 15. Both cars, however, offer the comfort of climatized front seats and heated back seats as well as the luxury of leather upholstery.

Arguably, the Camry’s swoopy center stack layout is less pleasant to take in versus the traditional design of the Accord. There is no argument, however, that the Honda’s infotainment offerings are better. Base models come with a 7-inch touchscreen and smartphone integration. From the Sport Hybrid on up, a 12.3-inch display is on hand with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In the 2024 Camry, you’ll also find a standard 7-inch infotainment interface, but the largest option measures only 9 inches, and though Apple and Android integration is included across the board, there is no wireless option. As well, the Accord comes with a standard digital gauge cluster and the premium audio system is a Bose 12-speaker setup versus a JBL 9-speaker stereo on top-end Camrys.

Trims and Features

Regardless of which model and trim line you’re looking at in this 2024 Accord vs. Camry matchup, the roster of standard advanced driver aids is almost identical. Both cars include forward collision mitigation, a lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams on all models. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert shows up on the Accord EX and Camry XLE.

The 2024 Accord starts at about $29,000 for an LX model, which features alloy wheels, LED headlights, passive entry, cloth upholstery, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. For $31,000, an EX brings a sunroof, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an 8-speaker audio system.

From here on up, it’s all hybrids for Honda, starting with the $34,000 Sport, which has gloss black trim, 19-inch rims, and a larger infotainment display. EX-L grades run $35,635 and come with leather seating, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and parking sensors.

For just about $36,000, the Sport-L hybrid rocks matte black 19-inch wheels. In range-topping Touring trim, which costs nearly $40,000, you’ll enjoy rain-sensing wipers, ventilated front seats and heated rears, Google Built-In, a head-up display (HUD), a wireless phone charging pad, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.

A base 2024 Camry LE undercuts the base 2024 Accord by about $1,400 and comes with a largely similar array of content. For $29,000, SE models add 18-inch wheels and SofTex upholstery, while the SE Nightshade dials up the style for another $1,000.

Camry XLE is a luxury-leaning model. It starts at $32,265, for which you get passive entry, leather upholstery, heated front seats, ambient cabin lighting, a wireless phone charging pad, and a bigger touchscreen. In sporty XSE getup, the Camry is nearly $33,000 and comes with gloss black 19-inch rims, available two-tone paint, and the option for a HUD, a surround-view monitor, connected navigation, and a panoramic moonroof.

The 2024 Camry TRD is an aggressive variant that starts at $34,580. Features include special wheels, a body kit with a huge rear spoiler, red cabin accents, and a special gauge cluster. The hybrid powertrain can be added to LE, SE, XLE, and XSE Camrys for about $2,500, while the V6 is optional on XLE and XSE models for an extra $5,100. The Verdict

2024 Toyota Camry - toyota.com
2024 Toyota Camry - toyota.com

Which car is the best bet in this 2024 Honda Accord vs. Toyota Camry matchup? It’s the Camry and kind of by a lot. Why? Well, the Camry starts at $1,400 lower than the Accord and the base hybrid Camry comes in at nearly $4,000 under the base hybrid Accord with a similar margin for top-spec hybrids. Buyers can choose a V6 in the Camry and AWD, neither of which the Accord offers.

Both cars have earned top safety ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (though the 11th-gen Accord has not yet been tested by the NHTSA, the prior generation performed well) and both come with 10 standard airbags. Also common across both lineups is the 3-year basic warranty, a 5-year powertrain warranty, and 2 years of complimentary maintenance.

The 2024 Accord has more cabin and trunk space than the Camry while offering a larger infotainment interface. But that’s about where the advantages end.

Plus, along with the built-in price benefits the Camry has over the Accord, with the 2025 model on the horizon, there’s a good chance buyers can negotiate an excellent deal on this final model year of the outgoing generation. On that note, don’t forget to do your research on the latest new car incentives before shopping for either car!
