Modern automakers need to build cars that appeal to everyone. They need to have great tech, excellent comfort, good handling, and acceptable fuel economy. That last feature gets more and more important as gas prices go up. SUVs can struggle to be fuel efficient, but we’ve found a group that goes above and beyond when it comes to efficiency.
When comfort is king, the Lexus UX 250h is an outstanding option. It manages up to 41 mpg combined and it does that while offering an upscale cabin, luxury features like heated and ventilated front seats, a heads-up display, and a power liftgate. It also has a five-star NHTSA crash test rating and a six-year or 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. Hybrid components get coverage for a decade or 150,000 miles for peace of mind.
If a vehicle like the Lexus UX is out of one’s budget, the Venue is a great car to fall back on. It manages up to 31 mpg combined and starts at just $21,295. For that, buyers get a surprisingly spacious cabin, excellent switchgear, and six speakers across the lineup. Available options include a wireless charging pad, a sunroof, and heated seats.
Of all the SUVs here, the Trax probably offers the very most bang for the buck. For $24,000, this little vehicle comes with great features including an 11-inch infotainment system, 17-inch wheels, automatic climate control, a digital gauge cluster, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more. It’ll also get up to 28 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway with 30 mpg combined.
Of every vehicle here, the Kia Sportage Hybrid might be the best in the bunch as it achieves up to 43 mpg combined. It doesn’t need a plug-in drivetrain to do that either. The Sportage Hybrid manages that with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, hybrid powertrains, and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is also available though fuel economy dips a bit. On top of that, it’s a spacious and high-tech SUV.
Much like the Sportage, the Tucson offers excellent interior space, tons of standard features, and good fuel economy. In fact, it’s even more fuel efficient as it offers 33 miles of electric-only range. Once the battery is depleted, it’ll still achieve up to 35 mpg combined. Finally, the Tucson comes with an industry-leading warranty including three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance.
Consider the Hornet as the louder, more aggressive competition for a vehicle like the Tucson or Sportage. It’s capable of achieving up to 29 mpg combined while also offering 32 miles of all-electric range. It’s one of the sharper drivers here too thanks in part to a lot of Alfa Romeo DNA. This is, after all, a badge-engineered version of the Tonale. Finally, it features one of our favorite infotainment systems as it’s quick and intuitive.
Everything that we like about the Sportage applies to the Sorento but the bonus here is more interior space. Kia offers a hybrid version that gets an impressive fuel economy of 36 mpg combined and a plug-in hybrid that gets 34 mpg combined while also offering 32 miles of electric-only propulsion. Unlike most three-row SUVs, the Sorento comes standard as a six-seater with captain’s chairs in the second row and a two-seat bench in the back. We really like the standard 12.3-inch infotainment system and the excellent ten-year powertrain warranty.
The Grand Highlander is one of the most impressive vehicles here as it’s huge but still manages up to 37 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway for a total of 36 mpg combined. The third row is possibly the most spacious here and the rest of the cabin feels airy too. Buyers can select a bench or captain’s chairs for the second row so it’s possible to seat eight or add a little bit more elbow room. As is the case with most Toyota products, the Grand Highlander gets a great tech package, a top-notch safety suite, and two years of complimentary maintenance.
Few SUVs on this list manage to flatten the line between luxury and mainstream the way the CX-90 does. It’s priced somewhat like a bargain when compared to Lexus, Audi, or Acura models. Despite that, it’ll still feel as though it’s a cut above brands like Toyota, Honda, or Nissan. In addition, it comes with up to 25 miles of all-electric range before switching over to hybrid power. In that form, it still gets 27 mpg combined. Finally, it’s the best SUV to drive of everything here.
