AMC AMX Super Stock

We’ll start with one of the earliest examples of the red, white, and blue on a car with the 1969 AMC AMX Super Stock. The paint scheme on these models had been used previously on a set of AMX models that set 106 speed and endurance world records out at the Goodyear Proving Grounds track. AMC decided to continue this paint scheme on the AMX Super Stock and start a trend of red, white, and blue muscle cars at the end of the decade. Just 52 of these NHRA prepared AMC cars were made featuring drag slicks and a 390 CID V8 outfitted with plenty of aftermarket goodies.

AMC Hurst SC/Rambler

Hurst had so much fun modifying the AMX Super Stock when it debuted that the performance part company decided to work with AMC to produce a couple more red, white, and blue dragstrip sleepers. The SC/Rambler was introduced in 1969 featuring the same 390 CID V8 from the AMX put inside of the AMC Rambler. Only 1,512 of these cars were made, but those SC/Ramblers also came in two patriotic paint schemes. The A scheme had a large red stripe down the sides and a blue stripe on top running from the roof to the tail. B scheme featured stacked red and blue stripes that ran around the bottom of the vehicle. Both featured a blue arrow pointing to the hood scoop with “390 CU.IN” in reference to the engine size.

AMC Rebel “The Machine”

Following the success of the SC/Rambler, AMC introduced the 1970 AMC Rebel “The Machine”. This red, white, and blue production dragster is one of the most iconic cars of the height of the muscle car era. 2,326 Rebel Machines were produced, but only the first 1,000 or so received the patriotic paint scheme. Under the hood of this mid-sized muscle car was a 390 CID V8 mated to a 4-speed manual transmission that featured a floor-mounted Hurst shifter. 340 horses that sent “The Machine” down the quarter mile in just over 14 seconds, but some claimed they could do it in 12.7 seconds.

AMC Javelin SST Trans-Am

The last red, white, and blue AMC of the muscle car era was the 1970 AMC Javelin SST Trans-Am edition. Around 100 of these cars were produced to compete in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) series. These racing purposed Javelin models featured a unique dual-venturi grille, front and rear spoilers, and carried a 390 CID V8 under the twin-nostril hood. The car was famously driven by racing legend Mark Donohue that season which coincided with AMC producing similarly specced Mark Donohue Edition Javelins, but the Trans-Am models are exceedingly rarer.

Plymouth AAR Cuda

The 1970 Cuda had plenty of “High-Impact” colors to choose from, but nothing that represented the flag directly. Plymouth did however introduce the AAR Cuda which honors Dan Gurney’s “All American Racers” team that participated in the SCCA Trans Am series. The AAR decal on these Plymouths may not display as much patriotism as AMC, but there’s nothing more American than feeling that four-barrel 305 CID V8 rumble when you put that pedal down in an AAR Cuda.

1971 Ford Baja Bronco

How about we take things off the pavement and talk about the patriotic Ford Bronco of 1971. Ford honored Baja legend Bill Stroppe’s victories by introducing the Baja Bronco. The roof and hood were painted blue, the top half of the body was white, and the bottom was red. This color choice was taken from Stroppe’s team colors, but it’s hard not to consider the combo to be American flag inspired. This wasn’t just a special paint scheme though. The Baja Bronco carried an upgraded suspension with added shock absorbers, a 302 CID V8 under the hood, big off-road tires, wide fender flares, and a couple other unique options available from the man himself like the “Cactus Smasher” push bar on attached to the front bumper. Ford sold this special edition between 1971 to 1975 and it’s estimated that about 650 were produced.

The Olympics are always a high point for American patriotism and Ford jumped on that idea for the 1972 Ford Mustang Sprint. This model coincided with the 1972 Summer Olympics that took place in Munich, West Germany. The Sprint edition added white striping all around the car with red accent pinstriping, a USA shield on the rear quarter panels, and a white and blue interior with vinyl seats that featured red piping.

Rather than wait for 1976, Chevrolet jumped the gun and celebrated America’s Bicentennial early for 1974. Chevy also didn’t just make one special edition, but three. The Spirit of America series added red and blue stripes all around the exterior over white bodies for the Nova, Vega, and Impala. The package also added Spirit of America badging, red or blue dashboards, color matching seatbelts and carpet, and white vinyl seating. There was also a highly contested fourth Spirit of America model in the El Camino, as some examples have popped up with the same color options and interior additions. It was never officially marketed as an option, and some speculate that the Spirit of America El Caminos were actually dealership installed.

Buick used to be heavily involved in the racing world, especially NASCAR and IndyCar. One way they marketed themselves to racing fans was by being the pace car for major racing events. This led to various Indy 500 pace car editions from Buick, but nothing was more patriotic than the 1975 Buick Century Indy 500 pace car edition that was dubbed “Free Spirit”. 1,813 examples of these replica red, white, and blue T-top Buicks were produced in the exact same style as the one that rounded Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The last Bicentennial edition car of 1976 comes from AMC who’s well versed in America’s colors, but the AMC Pacer isn’t nearly as cool as its predecessors. All this hatchback got was an American flag styled stripe down the side that says “Pacer ‘76” and a commemorative AMC Patriot Edition shield decal on the rear.

The Dodge Viper SRT-10 is already one of the coolest sports cars to come out of a Mopar brand, but the American Club Racing (ACR) versions took it another step further. The Viper ACR Extreme, for example, added a ridiculous aero package and all the other performance goodies that allowed this model to break 14 different lap records in competition. A screaming, American-made 8.4L V10 already gets the patriotism flowing, but there were 11 examples produced in the Viper’s last year that make it ideal for this list. The 2017 Dodge Viper ACR Extreme Roanoke Dealer Edition was only available at a top-selling Roanoke, Illinois dealership and featured a one-off exterior package where a blue and red stripe ran the length of the white Vipers.

Saleen loves to make high-performance versions of Ford vehicles, especially the Mustang. One model in particular stands out as the most American example of a Saleen Mustang and that is the American Flag Edition. Back in 2007, Saleen announced that they’d produce 24 patriotic examples of the S281 Supercharged Mustang in honor of America’s military servicemembers. The 2008 Ford Mustang Saleen S281 American Flag Edition came in two colorways. One was navy blue with and driver-side oriented red racing stripe with a white outline. The other was the same design but with a white body and a blue and red racing stripe. It also came with a military discount that included $500 off and a free day of performance driving school.

Hennessey is another American performance car tuner that once held the record for the world’s fastest production car back in 2014. The Hennessey Venom GT achieved an astonishing 270.49 mph with its 1,244-horsepower 7.0L twin-turbocharged V8 on the runway at the Kennedy Space Center. You know, the same runway used by NASA’s space shuttles! To honor the achievement and to acknowledge the patriotism that backs our nation’s space program, Hennessey introduced the Venom GT WFE. These exceedingly fast production cars were given red and blue stripes down the middle of the Venom GT’s white body. Only three were made and each was sold for a staggering $1.25 million.

It isn’t just American auto brands that show a little love to Old Glory. The Ferrari 458 Speciale features a unique white and blue decal in honor of NART, Ferrari’s North American Racing Team. That’s already paying respect to Ferrari’s that dominated American endurance racing, but pair it with the Rossa Corsa paint and you’ve got yourself a red, white, and blue Italian sports car.

Ram also honored our nation’s Armed Forces and first responders with the Built to Serve Edition trucks. Jeep Freedom Editions

2023 Freedom Edition - Jeep.com

The Jeep Freedom Editions started on the 2003 Jeep Wrangler TJ and has been going ever since. Everything from the Renegade to the Grand Cherokee to the Patriot has carried some variation of the Freedom Edition. This year, the current Freedom Edition is reserved just for the Wrangler and Gladiator. Both these models pay tribute to the United Staes military with special Freedom decals and “Oscar Mike” badging. For those not keen to military lingo, “Oscar Mike” is phonetic radio speak meaning “on the move”.

Jeep has been known as the most patriotic car brand year after year. It makes sense since the Jeep beginnings point to the Willys Jeep that was used during WWII. The military influence has stayed strong for Jeep over the years as it still carries the same seven slat grille design and boxy, militaristic aesthetic that was used all those years ago. Owning a jeep is American enough, but there’s also a special edition series that takes patriotism to the next level.
