As is the case with buying any car at any age, there are several factors worth considering in this particular situation. In the case of a car that would appeal to seniors in general it’s important to find a car with great visibility, straightforward technology, good value for money, and advanced safety features.
Perhaps just as vital is that the vehicle offers ease of access and above-average comfort in the cabin itself. We’ll focus on cars with smaller proportions that are easier to pilot through cramped spaces, ones that feature great warranty and maintenance coverage, and those that make everyday life just a bit less stressful. With all of that in mind let’s dig into the best SUVs for seniors on sale today.
Of all the cars here, the Trax might be the most surprising. It’s only available with a three-cylinder engine and front wheel drive but don’t let that throw you off. It’s an incredibly good value for money since it starts at just $21,000.
The Chevrolet Trax is spacious, easy to drive, and has such a straightforward control stack that anyone can get comfortable quickly. We also love the available remote start, heated front seats, and heated steering wheel.
Those who need a bit more space and luxury should consider the CX-50. Despite its somewhat aggressive looks, this SUV proves to be a perfect companion in most cases. It comes standard with AWD and a 187 hp engine that gets up to 30 mpg on the highway.
The Mazda CX-50 is full of high-end materials that appear to belong in a car that is thousands more. Finally, it also gets adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure mitigation as standard equipment.
For 2024, Volvo makes the XC40 an all-wheel-drive-only subcompact SUV with 247 hp and a starting price of just over $41,000. That’s a good package but it’s even more enticing when you factor in features like the super-functional interior design, the exceptional visibility.
Volvo has always had a great reputation for safety. So it’s not surprising that it scored a five-star crash test rating with the NHTSA. It also gets three years or 36,000 miles of free maintenance. What’s not to like?
The Soul might have initially been aimed at a younger crowd but that’s sort of what makes it great for seniors too. It’s fun, it’s fresh, and it’s approachable. The 147 hp engine under the hood won’t win any awards but it does return up to 35 mpg on the highway.
In our experience, it’s possibly the easiest SUV here to get into and out of. The Soul also benefits from excellent visibility, great cargo space, and supportive seats. Along with great design features, the Kia Soul also comes with an industry-leading 10-year powertrain warranty and 5-year
Toyota’s no-nonsense approach to interior design makes the RAV4 an easy choice. Buyers will no doubt love the inclusion of many physical controls including knobs, buttons, and switches. In addition, the RAV4 is capable of achieving up to 35 mpg and that’s not including the hybrid which gets up to 41 mpg.
The RAV4 also has some nice touches like an available hands-free liftgate, parking assist, and a 360 overhead view camera for extra visibility when parking. Plus every new RAV4 comes with 2 years of ToyotaCare with 24-hour roadside assistance and no-cost maintenance plans.
Every Tucson benefits from a great warranty and three years or 36,000 miles of free maintenance. Beyond those features, we applaud Hyundai’s use of high-quality cabin materials that make the Tucson a great place to spend time.
The Tucson’s infotainment system is easy to navigate, but the safety technology is what makes the Tucson a great choice, in our review we noted its excellent cruise control features and the Highway Driving Assist II package that adds some nice assisted features for changing lanes.
The CR-V has been a winner of numerous awards and the 2024 version is the best yet. Even more so than in previous generations it’s comfortable and classy with great controls. It’s available with a gas or hybrid engine, front or all-wheel drive, and a bevy of important safety features come standard.
Every CR-V gets lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. To top it off, Honda provides two years or 24,000 miles of complimentary maintenance too.
The Kia Sportage might not immediately come to mind for most but it’s an awesome value for money. Priced starting at just $28,565, the Sportage comes standard with a 187-hp four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available though as is a 226 hp hybrid engine or a 261 hp plug-in hybrid.
Kia also incorporates above-average safety tech just like the Honda CR-V but tacks on an impressive five-year or 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.
The Jeep Compass climbs onto this list specifically for a few notable features. It’s relatively inexpensive, it comes standard with AWD, it’s very easy to drive, and it also has one of the most intuitive and easy-to-use infotainment systems in the business.
The Compass comes with free maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, gets up to 32 mpg on the highway, and offers exceptional visibility. Buyers who want even more can get a low “crawler” gear, adaptive cruise control, and 18-inch wheels.
As the only true luxury vehicle in this list, the GV70 makes it here for so many of the reasons we’ve already talked about with other entries. It has a warranty that nothing else beats, maintenance is covered for three years, it’s easy to get into and out of, and it’s a screaming value compared to others in its class.
The Genesis GV70 is incredibly comfortable, easy to drive, and sports an interior that anyone can manage. All-wheel drive is standard and the GV70 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ as well.
Hello, what, no Subaru Foresters? I have owned three Subbies and I am a disabled Veteran. I love the fact that I do not have to step down and then try to climb out of a low vehicle. AWD is the savior for the dirt back roads in our county. Has plenty of interior room and in the Sport model we have all the useful bells and whistles plus a phenomenal Harmon Kardon stereo system. The vehicles size allows for high maneuverability and firs well in parking spots. You missed a crown jewel on this one, and oh, it won’t break the bank!
