BMW, Lexus, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. They’re all here. These are some of the best luxury hybrid SUVs of 2024!
Hybrids are great options for those ready to step a little bit away from a combustion engine, but maybe not suited for a fully electric vehicle. There are plenty of hybrid SUVs to choose from with some, such as the 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, starting as low as $31,725. The RAV4 is one of the Best Small Hybrid SUVs Under $30,000. Several luxury brands are in the hybrid game, too. That’s what we’re focusing on today, so get comfortable (and get out your checkbooks) as you look at some of the best luxury hybrids that money can buy.
The Porsche Cayenne has certainly been successful. Over 1.25 million of them have been sold since 2002. Well, in 2018, Porsche entered the hybrid game with an electrified version of the Cayenne and the 2024 model just received a refresh. Starting at $91,700, this plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) comes in a couple of all-wheel drive (AWD) variants. There’s the E-Hybrid, which uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 and a 20.6-kWh battery that’s good for a maximum combined 463 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Beyond the E-Hybrid, Porsche offers the S E-Hybrid and the Turbo E-Hybrid. Riding on 20-inch wheels, the S starts at $97,504 with a combined maximum of 512 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The Turbo E-Hybrid goes all the way up to $143,691, but it also cranks output to a combined maximum of 729 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque!
The power is great, but what’s a luxury hybrid without the luxury? Well, there’s plenty of it in the 2024 Porsche Cayenne PHEVs. Actually, it starts underneath the Cayenne. New shock absorbers were added for better ride. Adaptive suspension is now standard, too. The Sport Chrono Package also adds a Sport Plus drive mode. The result of some of these changes is a smoother feel in a SUV that drives more luxury than before. The seat quality depends on the hybrid model. The E-Hybrid comes with power-adjustable and heated front seats. The S E-Hybrid adds heated rear seats and ventilated front seats with memory functions. It also has massaging front seats.
A large 12.6-inch digital gauge cluster displays information for the driver and a 12.3-inch touchscreen is centered in the dash. There’s also an optional 10.9-inch touchscreen that is embedded in front of the passenger seat, providing more entertainment options and operational ability for the up-front passenger. The wireless smartphone charger is standard on the 2024 Cayenne models. Another switch, not necessarily good or bad, is that the shifter is now a toggle switch on the dashboard. Located to the right of the steering wheel, that move may take a little adjusting for drivers. In addition to the enhanced cabin, there are more driving features included in the 2024 Porsche Cayenne PHEV. A blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assistance, and LED adaptive headlights are all standard now, too. Already a luxury vehicle, the 2024 Porsche Cayenne hybrids benefit nicely from this mid-generation update.
Like the 2024 Porsche Cayenne, the 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e was also revised with new front and rear styling. Unlike the 2024 Cayenne, the BMW X5 xDrive50e starts at $72,500. Along with the gasoline-powered models, the xDrive50e PHEV gets a boost in power with a new 48-volt hybrid system and revised six-cylinder engine. An eight-speed sport automatic transmission with manual shift modes mates to a turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Along with electric motors and a rechargeable battery pack, the configuration puts out a total of 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. This AWD PHEV has 40 miles of all-electric driving.
Inside of the 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e is room for five people and seat colors that come in black, cognac, coffee, and Silverstone. The upholstery is made of a special high-quality vegan material that covers the seats and some of the dash. A bit of high-gloss wood trim is added for some flare, too. Velour carpeting could be a risk in the wrong color, but, here, it looks sophisticated and polished. A curved display with 12.3-inch instrument cluster gives the driver plenty of information to easily focus on, but there’s also a 14.9-inch information touchscreen display that’s centered for easy driver and front passenger access. Both front seats get four-way power lumbar support.
In addition to the panoramic sunroof that allows a little bit of nature to enter the vehicle and the comfortable rear seats that allow for 37.4 inches of legroom, the cabin and vehicle are filled with various modern tech updates. Those features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, wireless device charging, and a HiFi sound system with 10 speakers. On the safety side of things, BMW incorporates automatic high-beam headlights, a rear-view camera, forward collision warning, active blind spot detection, and a lane-departure warning. For a complete breakdown of features by trim level, you can read our full 2024 BMW X5 review.
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale may have the lowest starting price of the bunch at just $43,845. It’s a compact AWD SUV that has three trims with a plug-in hybrid variation. This little compact does have more compact-sized power. It’s got a combined 285 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque coming out of the 1.3-liter four-cylinder and rear axle-mounted electric motor. It’s got a little bit of hustle on the highway, but the 2024 Tonale is more of an in-town driver. Obviously, it doesn’t match power with midsize or full-size hybrids on this list, but it can handle 2,000 lbs of towing. The 2024 Tonale hybrid uses a six-speed automatic transmission and gets an estimated 30 miles of all-electric range with the 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Using a 240-volt connection, the Tonale will charge in about two and a half hours.
The interior has seats that are made of either cloth or simulated suede. It is stylish, though, with red contrast stitching on the seats and on the dash. Alfa Romeo branding is embedded on the headrests, too. Between that and the 10.25-inch touchscreen, the cabin gives off an upscale vibe. Wireless phone charging, wireless smartphone connectivity, an integrated navigation system, and six speakers are standard. The 10.3-inch touchscreen is nicely mounted in the center of the dash. Ambient interior lighting, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are some of the possible cabin upgrades. There’s enough room to sit without feeling uncomfortable with 41.7 inches of dedicated front-row legroom and 38 inches reserved for the second row. Cargo space measures 22.9 cu. ft. if second-row passengers are in place. That space maxes out at 50.5 cu. ft.
There are a few standard driver-assistance features on the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV. It’s not an extensive list, but a blind-spot warning, forward collision mitigation, and front and rear parking sensors are all on it. Rain-sensing wipers, power-folding heated mirrors, and a surround-view camera system are all added at higher trims, too. It may be the least of the luxury models, but the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale offers a more premium experience than lesser-priced competitors. Perhaps more importantly, this hybrid is a nice bridge to Alfa Romeo’s fully electric future, which the company is hoping to proceed with by 2027.
If you want a hybrid SUV that can fit the whole family, the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover PHEV is worth looking at. It may take the entire family to make the car payments, though. The starting price is $142,575. This plug-in option is exclusive to the Autobiography trim though there are some 48-volt mild hybrid options available along with a range of gas engines, too. The 2024 Land Rover Range Rover P550e PHEV replaces the P440e PHEV. It makes 542 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Land Rover says the P550e Autobiography gets 51 miles of electric-only range by using the 31.8-kWh battery pack. The battery can be recharged with a home-based charger or by using DC fast charging.
The technology flows over into the comfort of the cabin, too. There’s a four-zone automatic climate control system that independently heats and cools the driver, front passenger, and the second-row outer passengers. Land Rover puts the customization in the buyers’ hands with perforated leather or actual leather seats. Some of the creature comforts include ventilated rear seats, power rear sunshades, a rear-seat entertainment system, and the 35-speaker Meridian premium audio system! The front console even has a refrigerator. The spacing leaves 39.9 inches of legroom up front and 40.4 inches of legroom for rear-seat passengers. Suitcases and larger objects can be stored in the cargo area, which maxes out at 83.5 cu. ft. if all seats are folded down.
Advanced driver-assist features like forward collision mitigation, a driver attention alert, a rear cross-traffic alert, and a blind-spot warning all come standard across the 2024 Range Rover lineup. So do adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree overhead camera, and lane-keeping assist. The Autobiography trim also gets a digital rearview mirror, a Head-Up display, and an automated parking system. In terms of safety, in terms of electronics, and in terms of size, and in terms of power, the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover P550e makes the most out the over $100,000 price tag.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a popular midsize SUV for the automaker. Now, as we mentioned in our review of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE, there’s a brand-new plug-in version available. The 2024 GLE 450e is a PHEV that brings all the styling, tech, and sophistication from the GLE with it. It adds efficiency with a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo and an electric motor that work together to deliver a combined 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. By itself, the gasoline-powered engine is good for 248 horsepower. The electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack provide 134 horsepower. The electric and combustion motors can handle up to 7,700 lbs. of towing. With the help of a nine-speed 9g-tronic automatic transmission, power is sent to all four of the 19-inch or 21-inch wheels. That efficiency I mentioned comes in the form of 48sp miles of electric range. The 450e has a charging speed of 9.6 kW which equates to about three hours of charging time. A direct current charging speed of 60 kW will take about 20 minutes to get up to between 10 and 80% capacity.
The 2024 450e seats five passengers with 40.3 inches of legroom in the front row and 40.9 inches of legroom in the second row. There is a third-row seat option, too. Speaking of space, there’s 31.5 cu. ft. of cargo room with five people in the car and both rows of seats upright. When seats are folded down, that space more than doubles to 74.9 cu. ft. of space. There’s performance and space, and then there’s comfort. This Benz certainly has that with massaging, contouring leather front seats that have memory settings. The front seats are also power-adjustable and are available with a rapid-heating element. Drivers in colder climates should also appreciate the heated front armrests and upper door panels. The front seats are ventilated on the Exclusive Trim package, too. Heated rear seats are another option.
Of course, there’s plenty of technology infused with the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e. The cabin benefits from four-zone climate control and an air purification system, but other conveniences are also included. For example, there’s a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging, a thirteen-speaker Burmester sound system, in-car WiFi, and an augmented video navigation system. Every 2024 GLE 450e comes with a blind-spot warning, a surround-view camera, and a forward collision warning with automatic braking. For $1,950, the Driver Assistance Package also adds active distance drive, active and evasive steering assist, speed limit assist, lane keeping assist, active stop-and-go assist. There’s also a head-up display on the optional Pinnacle trim. As you can see, it’s very easy to increase several thousand dollars higher than the $69,500 starting price, but with all the features, it can be worth it.
There isn’t a long list of small plug-in hybrid luxury SUVs, but the 2024 Audi Q5 is one of them. It uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.9-kWh battery. This set up produces a combined 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0-liter engine puts out 201 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque on its own. Pushing out that power to all four wheels is a seven-speed S-tronic transmission. That electric motor is good for 23 miles on all-electric power while the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the 2024 Audi Q5 PHEV gets 23 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in the city and 29 MPGe on the highway. Towing capacity maxes out at 2,000 lbs.
When it comes to the cabin, the 2024 Audi Q5 TFSI e is laid out nicely. There’s enough room for everyone with 40.9 inches of legroom in front and 38 inches of legroom in the back. This $45,300 compact has heated front seats with an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. There’s also a heated steering wheel for the driver. Every Q5 also has a 10.1-inch touchscreen, three-zone automatic climate control, and a 10-speaker audio system. In addition, the 2024 Q5 hybrid has smartphone integration for Apple and Android phones. The Convenience package adds satellite radio and a driver’s seat with memory functions. Add-ons and other features at higher trim levels include a panoramic sunroof, a Bang & Olufsen audio system, and synthetic leather upholstery, leather upholstery, or synthetic suede upholstery. Acoustic insulated front windows keep the cabin quiet on some of the premier trims. Heated rear seats and even heated and cooled front-row cupholders add another level of luxury to this Audi.
Some of the driver assists that are standard on every 2024 Audi Q5 are adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot warning, front and rear parking sensors, front collision mitigation, a lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Inside is an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Outside are heated mirrors. At higher trim levels, there is a head-up display, a surround-view camera with a 360-degree view, and built-in navigation. The transmission may be a little hesitant, the touchscreen could be a little bigger, and the audio system could be upgraded with additional speakers, but, overall, the 2024 Audi Q5 PHEV is nicely equipped, has impressive styling inside and out, and rides well from any seat in the cabin.
Another hybrid SUV that brings some refinement to the life of its passengers is the 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge. The mechanics and electronics in the XC90 work well together to provide a smooth ride. It’s good for a combined 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to tow up to 5,000 lbs with the help of an eight-speed automatic transmission. The AWD XC90 Recharge gets up to 32 miles of electric range with a 58 MPGe. The combustion engine achieves 26 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway. The battery pack requires five hours of charge time with an 18.8 kWh capacity.
At $71,900, the 2024 XC90 Recharge is a three-row midsize SUV with six or seven seats. It’s a comfortable cabin. The available handcrafted crystal gear shifter certainly stands out, but the tailored wool blend upholstery looks cheaper than it is. Thankfully, there’s also synthetic leather upholstery, leather upholstery, and premium leather upholstery to choose from. The front row has a nice 40.9 inches of legroom, the second-row dips down to 37 inches of legroom, and the third room has 31.9 inches. Standard cabin comforts include heated front seats, four-zone automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay integration, and a 10-speaker audio system. The driver and front passenger can control all of that with a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen. The amenities only increase with the next two trims. Wood interior trim is added to the cabin, an integrated second-row child booster seat can be added, the rear seats are heated, and the front seats are ventilated. The entire cabin gets a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, too, unless buyers opt for the 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
Driver assists are prominent on the 2024 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid, no matter what trim level is being considered. Adaptive cruise control, a driver attention warning, lane keeping assistance, a blind-spot warning with a rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and front and rear parking sensors are included on every XC90 Recharge. Headlight washers, a surround-view camera system, and a head-up display are a few other upgrades, too. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took a fresh look at the 2024 XC90 Recharge, giving it an overall five-star safety rating. Between the performance and the safety features, this luxury hybrid SUV has a lot to offer.
Lexus has a few hybrid SUVs on the market, including the 2024 TX plug-in hybrid and the 2024 NX plug-in hybrid, but the newest one to join the lineup is the 2024 Lexus RX 450h+. Lexus already offers the RX in hybrid form as the RX 350h and the RX 500h. The RX 450h+ is the new plug-in hybrid version of the RX. It’s a midsize five-seater that’s only available as the top-tiered Luxury trim, so it has a starting price of $70,580. This plug-in SUV is powered by a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that makes 270 horsepower on its own. Add in three electric motors and a large battery and the 450h+ is upgraded to 304 horsepower. The eight-speed automatic electronically controlled transmission (ECT) drives that power to all four wheels. The 2024 Lexus RX 450h+ has an estimated 37 miles of electric-only driving with an estimated 83 MPGe.
Since the 450h+ is only available as the top RX trim, it is loaded with features! It’s got ambient lighting, multi-zone climate control, ash bamboo and black open-pore wood interior trim, and perforated leather-trimmed upholstery. The upscale cabin also has enough space to get comfortable with 41.1 inches of front legroom and 37.5 inches of rear legroom. The cargo hold isn’t massive but can accommodate 29.6 cu. ft. of items. The rear seats fold in a 40/20/40 split, which expands the area to 46.2 cu. ft. Tech and comfort combine in the form of a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat. The front seats also have memory settings. The 450h+ comes with a radiant knee heater, a heated wood and leather-trimmed steering wheel, and heated and ventilated front and rear outboard seats. The rear seats also recline, giving passengers an extra boost of relaxation.
The technology continues on with a wireless phone charger, Bluetooth connectivity, a WiFi connection, a 14-inch touchscreen, and wireless Android and Apple connectivity. There’s also a 12-speaker sound system or optional 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system with surround sound. The 450h+ is stocked up on driver assistance features, too. A lane departure alert with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with a rear cross-traffic alert, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection are all standard. So is a road sign assist feature and a 10-inch Head-Up display. With the purchase of an additional package, the 450h+ can be upgraded with a digital rearview mirror, a panoramic view monitor, lane-change assist, traffic jam assist, and a front cross-traffic alert. When we reviewed the 2022 Lexus RX, we called it, “the classy crossover.” Our review of the 2023 Lexus RX commended the combination of comfort, safety, and style. That holds true for the 2024 Lexus RX, too. There’s plenty of luxury in the 2024 Lexus RX, whether it’s in the form of convenience or comfort. The 450h+ plug-in hybrid version may be a newcomer, but with how well-designed and enhanced this PHEV is, we’ve got to think it’ll have some staying power.
