Latest and Greatest

The automotive industry finds itself in a curious place. Prices have stabilized but remain stubbornly high. The rapid transition from internal combustion to electrification has slowed. Pillars of the industry are busily shuffling management, seeking mergers, or throwing caution to the wind on radical rebrands. Amidst the tumult, new cars continue to arrive apace including ever more advanced EVs, radically engineered supercars, and familiar nameplates in intriguing new guises. As you’ll see below, there are a lot of new cars worth getting excited about arriving in 2025 and beyond.

New Tesla Model Y Juniper

It’s been a long time coming, but Tesla is finally giving their all-star Model Y a much-needed update. The new Model Y Juniper lends new contours to the electric SUV’s body and major revisions to both the front and back ends. A new front-spanning lightbar graces the front of the Juniper while another spans the rear. The new lighting brings the Model Y’s design into closer proximity to other EVs. Indeed, the entire design hews toward the conventional, which is all to the good as far as we’re concerned. Almost as radical, the Juniper will offer turn a traditional signal stalk over Tesla’s less-than-intuitive steering wheel buttons. The Model Y’s revisions might appear minor, but we’re betting a little normalcy will do Tesla some good. The Tesla Model Y Juniper is already on sale in China and will go on sale in the US in 2025.

Tesla Roadster Returns (?)

You can almost set your watch by the unerring frequency with which Tesla teases and then delays the return of the Roadster. The car that made Tesla and, in the process, proved EV’s aren’t boring has needed a follow-up for over a decade. And, despite all the rumors and hints and teases, we’re still waiting. Tesla says the project is not only still one, but they plan to get the next-gen Roadster to market in 2025. Their stated goals for the car are lofty, so lofty as to easily explain the delay. They include a 620-mile range, a top speed of 250 mph, and a zero to sixty time of 1.9 seconds (with banana-pants hints at an even lower and more absurd target closer to one second). Will we see a new Tesla Roadster this year? Maybe, is all the better we can say right now.

Scout EVs Traveler & Terra

Scout Traveler and Terra - scoutmotors.com
Scout Traveler and Terra - scoutmotors.com

Less speculatively, Volkswagen Group’s resurrection of the Scout brand (bought from International Harvester) is indeed happening as seen in the unveiling of two new concepts last fall. The Scout Traveler and Terra (an SUV and pickup, respectively) are all-electric and built with off-road adventuring in mind as evidenced by solid front axles among other features. A 350-mile range, 7,000 lbs. of towing capacity, and a zero to sixty sprint for 3.5 seconds have seemingly become the bar for electric trucks. What makes the Scout stand out is their design, bringing some retro goodness from the original Scout along with a very tasteful and well-executed interior that abuts luxury status. The Scout Traveler and Terra are slated for a 2027 release.

Next-Gen Toyota 4Runner

The next-generation of Toyota 4Runner is fast approaching. Based on the Tacoma, the new 4Runner will offer the choice of a 2.4L turbo four-cylinder with 278 horsepower or a hybrid 2.4L making 326 horsepower. The updated design blends new and old and will reportedly include the 4Runner’s power liftgate rear window. Expect to see the new 4Runner arriving at dealerships in late 2025.

Lucid Gravity SUV

Lucid Gravity - lucidmotors.com

The EV start-up Lucid has earned a lot of praise for its all-electric performance sedan, the Air. Their follow-up, the Lucid Gravity, looks to recapitulate the former’s laudable handling in SUV form and early reports say they’ve set a new industry benchmark in the process. The Gravity will start around $80,000 and offer up to 440 miles of range. The 900-volt architecture will allow DC fast charging to add up to 200 miles of range in around 15 minutes. Production commenced in December of 2024 with the first deliveries imminent.

Honda Prelude Returns (!)

The return of the Honda Prelude has been hotly anticipated for over a year as the company has been trucking the concept version around the world from car show to car show. The wait is almost over as the Prelude is scheduled for a 2025 release. Here’s what we know so far: the Prelude will feature a hybrid powertrain (possibly a modified version of the 2.0L four-cylinder hybrid in the Accord), a price tag of between $30,000 and $40,000, and killer coupe styling. Honda has played their Prelude cards close, but that lack of concrete information has been tantalizing, nonetheless.

Sony/Honda Afeela 1

Honda’s collaboration with Sony is also nearing its release. The Afeela 1 is an all-electric sedan that looks to leverage Sony’s entertainment expertise for one of the most tech-forward cars in the industry. Not only are their screens spanning the dashboard including redundant side mirror screens, digital gauge cluster, infotainment, and passenger-side infotainment, there’s even a PlayStation controller and full gaming capability on board. Reportedly, the Afeela 1’s Intelligent Drive and Personal Agent features will revert to subscription-based after a three-year period. Among all those screens and software, the Afeela 1’s more novel feature is a customizable exterior screen across the front of the car, an odd but charming touch. Sony and Honda say the Afeela 1, priced at $89,000, will launch in 2026.

Lamborghini Temerario

Lamborghini Temerario - lamborghini.com

The new Lamborghini Temerario is raging bull’s replacement for the out-going Huracan, the brand’s “entry-level” supercar. The Temerario, which means reckless in Italian, looks a worthy successor as its twin-turbo flat-plane crank V8 will rev to a screaming 10,000 rpm and, with the assistance of three electric motors, make over 900 horsepower. The car’s design is a subtle evolution from the Huracan, one of the few subtle things about it. The entry-level Temerario carries a hefty $350,000 asking price and should go on sale in early 2025.

Bugatti Tourbillon

Bugatti Tourbillon - newsroom.bugatti.com

The Bugatti Tourbillon takes its name from a watch piece that maintains precise time. Not coincidentally, the Tourbillon, successor to the Chiron, is all about precision from its watch-themed analogue gauges to its AI-designed suspension componentry to its new naturally-aspirated 8.3L V16 and trio of electric motors. That motor will rev to 9,000 rpm and, along with said electric motors, deliver up to 1,775 horsepower. While much of the Tourbillon is new, signature design features like the Atlantic 57-derived center line and Bugatti horseshow grille are carried through. The Tourbillon is expected to enter production in 2026.

Ford Mustang Raptor

Following on the heels of the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Sterrato, Ford said hold my all-terrains and decided to give the Mustang the off-road Raptor treatment for 2026. While little has been released on the Mustang Raptor we can expect all-wheel drive, an upgraded and lifted suspension, and plenty of paint-saving, rugged-looking body cladding. The Mustang Raptor will likely follow the Raptor/Raptor R split dividing between an entry-level version with a twin-turbo V6 (418 horsepower) and the Raptor R’s 5.2L V8 upwards of 700 horsepower. We’d expect the Mustang Raptor to be priced at around $90,000 to $100,000 starting out.

Rivian R2

EV-maker Rivian’s third vehicle, the R2, will be its smallest to date, slotting into the compact crossover category and going head-to-head with the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach E. The R2 will be priced around $45,000 – $55,000 and come in single-, dual-, and tri-motor configurations. The latter two will offer all-wheel drive and the tri-motor capable of a zero-to-sixty run of roughly three seconds. Of course, speed is secondary to the R2’s true mission, outdoor adventuring. To that end, the R2 will offer a series of off-road/overlanding focused options like a custom roof tent, bike rack, and travel kitchen. Expect the Rivian R2 to arrive sometime in 2026.

2026 Corvette Zora

With the 2025 Corvette ZR1’s already sporting jaw-dropping stats (1,064 horsepower) and wild performance times (2.3 seconds to sixty mph), you’d think there’s not a ton left for Chevy’s engineering team to accomplish with the C8. But rather than rest on those considerable laurels, Chevy is instead hard at work on the next wild Corvette variant, the Zora, named after the Zora Arkus-Duntov GM’s famed engineer and “Father of the Corvette.” The Zora will reportedly employ a hybrid system similar to the E-Ray’s combining electric motors with the ZR1’s 5.5L twin-turbo V8 for 1,224 horsepower which would take the Corvette from bargain supercar to bargain hypercar territory. The Corvette Zora will arrive late 2025 or early 2026.

Electric Ferrari

For a company so steeped in tradition, it’s been refreshing to watch Ferrari consistently stepping outside their comfort zone lately. For instance, there’s the “sacrilege” of building a Ferrari an SUV, which turned out to be the excellent Purosangue. Then there are the hybrids *gasp* including the incredible SF90 and 296 GTB/GTS. So, when Ferrari decides to go full electric, we’re cautiously optimistic they’ll successfully thread that needle. Rumor has it Ferrari will unveil their full-electric hypercar this year, but info is scant aside from a proposed sticker price of $550,000.

Lexus EV Supercar (LFA successor)

Lexus Electrified Sport Concept - lexus.com

It’s been 13 years since the end of production for Lexus’ one and only supercar, the LFA. And while elements of that car have trickled down to production models like the LC 500, we’ve always hoped the company might take another swing at a next-gen LFA. Lexus is doing just that with their “Electrified Sport,” a two-seat, full-electric concept they’ve been trucking around to auto shows for two years now. Benchmarks for the Electrified Sport include a two second zero to sixty time and 430 miles of range. Most loft of all, however, is this: the Electrified Sport may make “possible use of solid-state batter(ies).” Solid-state batteries are the next generation in EV battery tech but have yet to be refined and scaled for full production. Toyota has been hard at work on the technology and an LFA successor utilizing solid-state battery technology would make for one heck of a flagship vehicle. Toyota/Lexus says they’re aiming for a 2026 release, fingers crossed.

2026 Nissan Maxima EV

Full-size sedans aren’t dead, despite being canceled, like the Maxima, or morphing into crossovers like the Toyota Avalon/Crown. Instead, full-size sedans, as a segment, are being revived as EVs. Case in point, the Nissan Maxima whose internal combustion version was retired following the 2024 model year. But rather than allow a bankable nameplate to disappear, Nissan is bringing the Maxima back as a sporty electric full-size. Prices will range from about $44,000 to up to $60,000. It’s likely the Maxima will utilize the same powertrain as the Ariya, a 214-horsepower single motor version and a 389-horsepower dual-motor version with all-wheel drive. Expect a late 2025 release for the new Nissan Maxima EV.

2026 Polestar 6

Polestar 6 Concept - polestar.com
Polestar 6 Concept - polestar.com

Once the electric division of Volvo, Polestar’s newfound corporate independence means it needs a proper flagship model to help define the brand. The upcoming Polestar 6 looks to do just that and do so in style. While Tesla continues to postpone a new roadster, Polestar is pushing boldly ahead with the Polestar 6 as the all-electric roadster we’ve been dreaming of. The gorgeous 2+2 concept version is a stunner with performance to match. Polestar says the Polestar 6 will offer a dual-motor set up with 884 horsepower, a 3.1 second zero to sixty run, a top speed of 155 mph (limited?), a 300-plus mile range, and an 800-volt architecture similar to that of the Tesla Cybertruck. Good looks and the latest tech will cost you, however, the Polestar 6 will likely cost upwards of $200,000.

2026 Porsche Boxster EV

More than a few observers were taken aback when Porsche announced the next-generation 718 Boxster/Cayman would be ditching internal combustion for full-electrification. Recent rumors have revealed Porsche’s always exacting performance benchmarks are coming up against the natural tensions between heavy battery packs (power and range in an EV’s case) and athletic handling (a Porsche calling card). Work at getting the new electric 718 to where it needs to be has meant the engineering team is “well behind schedule” as they repeatedly return to suppliers asking for tweaks to the mid-mounted battery pack. The 718 project isn’t the only electrification project hitting delays at Porsche, the upcoming Cayenne EV also might be pushed back to a 2026 debut and a planned three-row electric SUV has been effectively put on ice. Even so, given the Porsche Taycan is neck-and-neck with the Lucid Air for the best handling EV on the market (yes, the Lucid is that good), we remain excited by what Porsche could accomplish with an all-electric two-seater like the 718. Will they get one sorted by the end of the year? Time will tell.

2026 Genesis GV60 Magma

Not to be left out of the performance EV race, Genesis unveiled their Magma line last year, denoted by killer volcanic orange paint jobs as the default color scheme. The GV60 Magma is slated to arrive first, and upgrade of the current GV60 Performance which currently offers a dual-motor powertrain making 429 horsepower. We expect the GV60 Magma to offer either the EV6 GT’s 576-horsepower set up or, even more enticingly, the Ioniq 5 N’s 641-horsepower build. Genesis says the GV60 Magma is “very close to production” and will be offered starting at $74,000 sometime in 2025. Subsequent Magma versions will arrive to match the rest of Gensis’ lineup in the next year or so.
