What’s New for the 2019 Ford Edge?

The 2019 Ford Edge picks up a new design language with its jutting solid chin of a front end flowing to a tapered rear. This aggressive and handsome design also comes with Ford‘s new ST and its marvelous twin-turbo V6 and AWD. Other models with the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder share the ST’s new 8-speed automatic. Ford also brings its new Co-Pilot360 to each Edge trim, including the SE.

In every version of the 2019 Ford Edge, other than the ST, you have two potential MPG benefits going for you – the standard 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and Ford‘s new for 2019 8-speed transmission. We say potential because on paper it all looks good. But you may be less than impressed when the two work together.

We felt that the turbo exhibits a considerable amount of lag in normal driving mode, or the 8-speed transmission isn’t shifting at the 4-cylinder’s best rev range. It’s as if they weren’t made for each other.

Regardless of the reason, acceleration and just general ease of driving were a problem. We assume we would learn how to live with it, but in the short time we had the Edge, we switched to sport mode for a better-quality drive. Sure, the gas mileage suffered, but it was worth it. Yes, it was that irritating.

One way to rid yourself of that entire issue is to get the 2019 Ford Edge ST. With its standard twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine screaming out 335 hp and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, you won’t be complaining about power. And the 8-speed transmission works perfectly with this engine. You also get Ford’s Intelligent AWD system to keep everything on the ground. It’s an exhilarating and fully competent SUV made for people who don’t want to give up their sports sedan but have to for the children’s sake.

Once past the engine and transmission struggles, we didn’t have any issues with the ride. The base model was smooth, comfortable, and quiet. Like many SUVs, any valuable road feel seems to be filtered out, but the steering is quick to turn when needed and still direct. Ford also does a superb job with the Edge’s suspension because it has a decent ability to absorb holes in the road and control body motions that might upset other SUVs. Of course, every model except the ST is tuned for comfort, so the Edge won’t plead for you to run the curves. But even then, it’s still fun to drive.

2019 Ford Edge Fuel Economy & MPG

Reports from disgruntled owners suggest that the Edge doesn’t match up with its EPA-rated fuel mileage. They may make generous use of the Sport mode to generate enough acceleration because this is, in fact, a bluff-faced SUV. We didn’t have an opportunity to do a fuel mileage run but, if the Edge fuel computer is any indication, owners won’t be happy with 12 mpg.

We want to cast serious shade on the EPA city rating of 21 mpg. While doing a steady-state highway speed, you may see the EPA’s mpg rating of 29 – if you’re coasting on a flat road – but as soon as you have to do a light acceleration, the 2.0-liter Edge forces you to get deep into the throttle turbo has to kick in and drive that weight.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The 2019 Ford Edge interior will look familiar to you since it has minimal changes from 2018. However, you’ll see a redesigned center console and the absence of a traditional shift handle. Instead, Ford has replaced that with a dial.

The redesigned console surrounding the dial does a great job of gracefully fitting into the instrument panel as if it was produced in one piece. We appreciate Ford’s eye for design here, but there are things which will require some learning. For example, all the buttons in the radio and climate control are similar. This type of design is something you’ll see in others, so Ford isn’t the only offender. It’s very nice looking and structured but still a little confusing if you’re not accustomed to it. But We also like the large rotating control dial for the system.

Part of being comfortable in your car can be attributed to the material fit and finish of what’s around you. And Ford doesn’t disappoint here. Even the SE model is well put together with nicely textured plastics and soft areas where you need them. The leather seats in the Titanium and ST feel like leather and not pleather, and there’s convincing suede on the ST. We applaud Ford for the work inside in comparison to the same area where its Chevy competition struggles.

The driver and passenger seats are very comfortable, but the rear seats weren’t as satisfying. Although larger than the Honda CR-V, the Edge’s second-row legroom is tight if you’re six feet tall. But everyone will enjoy the heated rear outboard seats when winter comes around.

Since some areas have hot summers, Ford has also included driver and passenger ventilated seats for a price. Once you use them, you can’t live without them. In addition, when used with the dual-zone climate control system on SEL and above, you’ll be comfortable in any climate.

You can also be comfortable knowing there’s an ample amount of storage for phones, bottles, and other things you always have with you. We particularly liked the hidden area below the climate control system and useable area under the center armrest. Ford understands the importance of keeping your items out of the view of parking lot passers-by these days.

As we make our way out back, you’ll see that the Ford Edge gives you a competitive 39.2 cu-ft of cargo space for day-to=day items. Should you need more, the 60/40 seats will fold flat and fit up to 73.4 cu-ft of things. Compared to the Toyota RAV4, the Ford Edge comes out on top with cargo space that’s nearly 2 more cubic feet in each area.

Entertainment & Technology

Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment operating system has been around for quite a while, and the latest update is even more responsive and easy operate. With the most accessed items on the home page, you won’t lose time trying to locate apps deep into menus. On the SEL and up, Ford gives you a colorful and clear 8-inch. Sure, it’s not 10+ inches, but it fits perfectly in the well-designed cabin.

The standard sound system on the Edge SE sound is good. Still, if you’re a stickler for a cleaner sound, the Bang & Olufsen 12 speaker system may be worth your money. And you’ll be happy to know that the Edge includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa plus the standard 4G WIFI for ten devices, provided you have a data plan that’s purchased separately.

Safety Features

The redesigned 2019 Ford Edge was tested by the NHTSA and received five stars out of five for the frontal and side crash tests. In addition, the IIHS gave the Escape a Midsized SUV / 4-door SUV Top Safety Pick Award.

Ford also hits a home run by including their Ford CoPilot360 Safety Suite which, according to Ford, includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a lane keeping system, automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring with cross traffic alert capabilities, and a reverse camera. We applaud Ford for providing safety across all their trim levels.

ST – $42,355

The 2019 Ford Edge ST keeps the Titanium benefits and ups the game with its powerful 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost engine that grinds out 380 lb-ft of torque and 335 horsepower. Inside, you get standard leather seats with suede inserts to grip you in turns.

Warranties

Ford gives you 3 years or 36,000 miles for the limited warranty and 5 years or 60,000 for your powertrain. There is no complimentary scheduled maintenance like you’d find with Toyota and Hyundai. If anything, you’d think manufacturers would provide complimentary maintenance to get you back to the dealership.

What we think

2019 Ford Edge - ford.com

2019 Ford Edge – ford.com |  Shop 2019 Ford Edge on Carsforsale.com

We like the 2019 Ford Escape. It’s an excellent alternative to larger SUVs without giving up the luxuries and ride quality you expect. Although the SEL fits perfectly with what most SUV buyers are looking for, we would most definitely choose the high-powered ST if it were our money. We figure the gas mileage will be mediocre regardless of the trim choice, so we should have fun between fill-ups.
