What’s New for the 2019 Honda Accord

There’s a reason that Honda has maintained its strong lead when it comes to mid-sized mid-priced sedans. That’s because they continue to offer an outstanding value for money with a great balance of driving engagement, economy, comfort, and build quality. In 2019, they look to continue their dominance by not trying to fix what’s not broken. The 2019 Honda Accord remains one of the best new mid-size sedans on the market with strong engines, economy, and comfort.

Only a year removed from the introduction of this, the 10th generation, not much has been changed for the 2019 model year. Pricing has seen a slight bump and the 1.5-liter engine is no longer available in the Touring trim level.

2019 Honda Accord Powertrain

Very few mid-sized sedans are as dynamic in their abilities as the Accord. We say that because this car covers a large swath of the factors that buyers want and it does them all pretty well. The base 1.5-liter engine is totally passable and provides adequate power to do anything one might need while remaining inexpensive. The Hybrid powertrain is incredibly efficient and boosts power a bit over the stock engine at the same time. Its only issue is that it’s a bit loud. Finally, the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is a pleasure to pilot with nearly 300 ft-lbs of torque and great overall power delivery.

For drivers that want a sporty experience, both pure gas engines can be paired with a no-cost manual transmission option that is actually really engaging. For those that opt for the Touring package with its adaptive dampers, the Accord turns into a very capable competitor to the Camry TRD. Really though, even the base Accord is a fun car to drive in the bends. It’s predictable and provides excellent feedback both through the braking pedal and the steering wheel. It’s confidence-inspiring and enjoyable so long as you’re not looking to go really fast in a straight line anywhere.

2019 Honda Accord Fuel Economy & MPG

In keeping with its flexible nature in terms of other features, the Accord is a strong performer when it comes to economy as well. Even the most powerful engine combined with a manual transmission achieves 26mpg combined while basically every other combination scores above 30. Finally, the Hybrid powertrain offers a remarkable 48mpg combined. That makes this one of the most versatile platforms when it comes to fuel efficiency.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The Accord is a surprisingly comfortable car and we say surprisingly because from the outside it doesn’t look capable of being as spacious as it is. Credit the engineering team at Honda for creating a cabin that’s well laid out and comfortable. It’s also rather attractive with higher quality materials everywhere you look that are nicely fitted in place with minimal panel gaps. Seating is very supportive and comfortable regardless of the position.

Climate control is accurate and fast to react. The automatic setting is especially impressive as it’s very quiet once it’s near the desired temperature. The LX model doesn’t come with rear climate vents which we feel is a bit of a miss but beyond that, passengers in the back won’t be cramped or uncomfortable at all. All four outboard seating positions have access to integrated storage spots as well.

As the Accord rides down the road it’s a bit louder inside than we expected. It’s by no means egregious but it’s worth noting that if you’re looking for a supremely quiet ride, this Honda won’t provide it. Nevertheless, it’s great at soaking up broken pavement and rougher roads without transmitting that feedback into the seating itself.

Entertainment & Technology

Honda has built its empire on straightforward high-quality design and it’s clearly on display here. Just a few years ago the infotainment system was full of issues like the lack of a volume button. Now, it’s intuitive, has a great user interface, and is really snappy. In addition, the voice control section works reasonably well.

We strongly suggest spending a little more to get the 8-inch touchscreen. Not only does it look crisper but it has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. We also really like the navigation system that was up to any task we set for it. Finally, the eight and ten-speaker systems are both good but in a sea of mostly lackluster premium audio systems, the Accord stands out as a few steps ahead.

Safety Features

There’s no getting around the fact that one of the best value propositions of the Accord is that it’s full of advanced safety features regardless of the trim. Across the entire line up you’ll find adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and forward collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking. Buyers can add more tech in the form of blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic alert as options. Consider too that the Accord scored a 5-star crash test rating from the NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS.

Warranties

Compare warranty coverage of the Accord to any of its rivals and it’s dead last. In fact, it feels like Honda was so confident that this car is better than those in every other aspect that they can afford to offer no more than the industry standard 5-year 60,000-mile powertrain warranty paired with a 3-year 36,000-mile limited warranty.

What we think

2019 Honda Accord

2019 Honda Accord – hondanews.com |  Shop 2019 Honda Accord on Carsforsale.com

It’s hard to argue that any competitor is a clear favorite against the Honda Accord. Sure, some companies like Hyundai and Toyota can beat it out in terms of warranty coverage or horsepower but the Accord continues to strike a great balance while maintaining its strong history of reliability and quality. For that reason, it should be in the running for anyone looking at this class of cars.
