2019 Jeep Cherokee Powertrain
The driving experience of the Cherokee is geared towards off-road capability, especially when equipped with all-wheel drive. The handling is thrilling, however, the Cherokee is on the heavier end of the spectrum compared to its rivals, so on-road performance isn’t always as brisk. The Cherokee offers plenty of powertrain options. The standard engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder producing 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. The 3.2-liter V6 delivers 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque with 4,500 pounds towing capacity. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder offers similar power, 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, but better fuel economy and a broader torque curve. Each engine is connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission that helps ensure power without sacrificing efficiency. Front-wheel drive is standard, but each engine is offered with an all-wheel drive system. The Active Drive Lock all-wheel drive system is the most capable with a locking differential, low range, and additional mode for the traction management system to help conquer rough terrain. Towing & Payload
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee offers a decent amount of towing capacity for a small SUV. Towing on most models is limited to 2,000 pounds. However, if you choose the 3.2-liter V6 and add the trailer tow package, the Cherokee can tow up to 4,500 pounds.
2019 Jeep Cherokee Fuel Economy & MPG
The fuel economy figures vary depending on the engine and drivetrain. The front-wheel drive models are the most efficient, with the 2.0-liter turbo engine achieving 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. The lease efficient version is the Trailhawk with the 3.2-liter V6 that gets 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The 2.4-liter engine tends to split the difference, with an all-wheel drive model getting 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space
The interior of the Cherokee is a nice place to spend time. There is seating for five people and a decent amount of cargo space behind the rear seats. Fold the rear seats down for over 54 cubic-feet of cargo room. The lower trim models get simple, but durable cloth seats while the upper trim levels are offered with premium Nappa leather trim. To combat those chilly mornings, heated front seats are available along with a heated steering wheel, and you can also get heated rear seats. The top trims are even offered with ventilation for the front seats, perfect for hot days. The available dual-zone automatic climate control system lets you and your passenger set individual temperatures, and the system will automatically adjust it’s setting to accommodate. Jeep offers a large power sunroof if you want to brighten up the interior with natural light or let in a nice fresh breeze from outside.
Entertainment & Technology
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee comes standard with Jeep’s Uconnect® 4 infotainment system which comes with a 7-inch touchscreen display. The system is responsive and easy to use and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and displays the rear-view camera. If you want the best technology, you’ll need to spring for the Uconnect® 4C NAV system which gets a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen, GPS navigation, and satellite radio. In the gauge cluster, Jeep includes a handy digital display that shows a variety of vehicle information, making it easy to find info quickly without taking your eyes off the road for too long.
Safety Features
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee comes with safety tech including blind-spot monitoring to help you be aware of other motorists in your blind spot by notifying you with a light built into the side mirrors. The rear cross path detection alerts you to traffic approaching from the sides as you back up and the rear-view camera helps you get a better look behind. Adaptive Cruise Control makes heavy traffic or long drives safer by automatically adjusting speed if you approach slower moving traffic. Jeep offers a full-speed forward collision warning with active braking system that can automatically apply the brakes if it senses a collision is imminent. Latitude – $25,490
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude is the entry point to the range and comes with front-wheel drive with all-wheel drive offered as an option, the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, 17-inch wheels, and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The interior has cloth seats, the Uconnect 4 infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen display, and six-speakers.
Latitude Plus – $27,145
The Latitude Plus is similar to the Latitude, but offers a few more options like additional colors choices, foldable side mirrors, an available sunroof, and eight-way power adjustable seats. The Latitude Plus also gets blind-spot monitoring and keyless entry.
Altitude – $28,140
Step up to the Altitude trim and the Cherokee gets larger 18-inch alloy wheels, black grille surrounds, and available dual exhaust tips.
Upland – $29,475
The Upland trim adds a little bit of off-road ready styling with a front fascia from the Trailhawk model, tow hooks, and 17-inch black alloy wheels. The Upland comes with the 3.2-liter V6 engine. Inside, you’ll find black cloth seats with unique blue stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and silver anodized trim.
Limited – $31,200
The Limited trim is more luxurious, with leather seats, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. A larger 8.4-inch touchscreen is offered on the Uconnect system, satellite radio, and an automatic dual-zone climate control system.
Trailhawk – $33,945
The Trailhawk model is the most capable version of the Cherokee. It comes with either the 3.2-liter V6 or the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The key difference is the more sophisticated all-wheel drive system with a low-range and a locking differential. The Trailhawk also rides a bit higher for better ground clearance. You can differentiate the Trailhawk from other Cherokees by the red tow hooks up front and the black decal on the hood.
High Altitude – $34,740
The High-Altitude model is essentially an appearance package for the Limited trim, with black wheels, black badges, and black grille.
Overland – $36,745
The Overland is the most luxurious Cherokee available with 18-inch alloy wheels, beautiful Nappa leather seats, with heating and ventilation for the front seats, and a leather trimmed dash. The Overland also gets niceties like a power liftgate, wooden accents, and an Alpine premium sound system.
Warranties
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee offers an adequate warranty with a 3-year, 36,000-mile basic coverage plan. The powertrain is covered by a longer 5-year, 60,000-mile warranty to cover anything that might come up with the engine or transmission.
