The minivan segment only has about a half-dozen vehicles and the 2019 Toyota Sienna stands out with its class-exclusive all-wheel drive, which is now available on SE trim. Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, and Toyota Safety Sense, the company’s suite of driver-assistance aids, are all standard lineup equipment for 2019. There is also some feature shuffling like offering the moonroof on SE models and the Preferred Package, with active safety features, on the LE.
Sienna remains the only minivan with available AWD
Driver Easy Speak makes parents heard
Real-time traffic info on navigation makes for smoother road trip
Dual moonroof offers plenty of fresh air ventilation

Almost all the features you could ask for in a family hauler
All models of the 2019 Toyota Sienna have the same 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 power plant making 296 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. Toyota has been honing this engine for some time and in this application it utilizes direct inject and variable valve timing.
An 8-speed automatic channels power to the front-wheels in standard application or all four when AWD is selected. The all-wheel drive system, which adds about $2500, features Active Torque Control to help direct the juice to the wheels that need it.
Front struts and a torsion-beam rear suspension configuration, plus stabilizer bars, ensure competent handling but you’re still driving a nearly 17-foot-long land yacht, so don’t expect nimble cornering. SE models do feature sport-tuned suspension and steering plus 19” wheels if you’d like a bit more spice on the dynamics front.
The only notable fuel-efficiency minded feature on the 2019 Toyota Sienna is its Atkinson cycle engine. And yet front-wheel drive models still have an EPA estimated 27 mpg on the highway. The city figure is 19 mpg, but considering the 4,440-pound curb weight and up to eight passenger seating, it’s not too bad. As expected, adding all-wheel drive components drops those numbers to 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Much of that is due to the added 200 pounds of mechanical equipment.
The 2019 Toyota Sienna is cavernous inside. It will swallow up to five golf bags with the third row raised. If you stow that row and remove the middle seats, 150 cubic feet of space is yours to fill. But minivans are typically need for hauling people, so the 36-37 inches of legroom in both rear rows is, well, huge.
In 7-passenger configuration, second row captain’s chairs can slide up to 23” backward and have dual armrests plus leg and foot support. With the 8-person layout, the middle row’s center seat can be removed for simpler rear access.
Upper-level trims are swathed in perforated leather with contrasting stitching along with heated front seats and steering wheel. The overhead console contains controls for the power-operated liftgate on Limited trim, but you will only need to pay for a base, Sienna L to access the automatic climate-control with zones for all three rows.
Toyota’s Entune infotainment software is controlled by a 7” touchscreen on every trim level. As you move up the ladder, features like satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and dynamic navigation are unlocked. Most models have a 6-speaker audio system but the available JBL system brings ten speakers plus a subwoofer.
If road trips are in your future, check out the rear-entertainment system with its drop-down, 16.4” screen and wireless headphones. More importantly, you’ll want to master the Driver Easy Speak tech for such trips. It utilizes a microphone in the overhead console to amplify the parents’, er, driver’s voice and broadcast it through the rear speakers. “The better to yell at you, my dear.”
Toyota stacks the 2019 Sienna with enough standard safety features to earn a 5-star rating from NHTSA. Four LATCH anchors, active front headrests and a network of airbags work in the background. Meanwhile, Toyota Safety Sense offers active assistance via pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and dynamic-radar cruise control. The company’s Star Safety System – also standard – bundles vehicle systems like stability control, ABS, and smart-stop technology together.
The biggest difference between entry-level L trim and all the others are the manual-operated sliding doors, no power here. Flat black plastic trim and 17” alloys are found outside, but inside sees triple-zone automatic climate controls and a backup camera. There is also a 7” console-mounted touchscreen handling Entune 3.0 duties with Siri Eyes Free tech included.
Easy-clean fabric, on LE models, is code for “kid-ready” upholstery. The sliding doors gain power operation here and AWD becomes optional with tinted rear glass and roof rails included. The driver seat is power adjustable, manual sunshades are tacked on rear side windows, and the Entune system gains Safety Connect and Wi-Fi capability.
Sporty-style SE Siennas show off smoked head- and taillight treatments, a mesh front grille, and gunmetal-colored 19” rims. Perforated leather covers the surfaces and front occupants receive heated cushions while the liftgate is power-operated and the doors can be open and closed with the key fob. Premium versions add niceties like heated side mirrors and a rear-seat entertainment system
On the XLE, the sliding center console adds woodgrain trim and illuminated cup holders. Cup holder enhancements continue in the rear seats where they feature 120V power outlets and dual USB ports. The rear quarter windows are power-operated on this model and Premium editions net the Driver Easy Speak public-announcement system and rear parking sonar sensors.
Acoustic glass in the windshield and front windows dials down the outside noise, on the Limited, and premium leather improves the comfort inside. The Limited gains Swiss Army-esque side mirrors that are heated, auto-dimming, power folding, reverse tilting, and so on. HID headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a 10-speaker JBL “Clari-Fi” audio system fill out the Limited spec sheet.
All new 2019 Toyota Siennas come with complimentary, factory scheduled maintenance in the first two years or 25,000 miles of ownership. The overall vehicle warranty lasts for 3 years or 36,000 miles and the powertrain components are covered for 5 years/60,000 miles. Any rust that forms on the body is under warranty for a 5-year term with unlimited mileage.

Parents’ like to think minivans aren’t “cool”, until they realize how much easier it is to herd their offspring and associated stuff with such a vehicle. The 2019 Toyota Sienna easily checks those boxes thanks to power sliding doors, dual moon roofs, safety up the wazoo, and your own personal PA system.
