What’s New for the 2020 Ford Edge?

The latest Ford Edge update was in 2019, but the truth is that this Ford Edge has essentially been around in its present form since 2011. Even though Ford’s entry into the mid-sized SUV category may be old, it’s grown a complete list of standard features, including adding safety assists on the base SE trim. New items for the 2020 Ford Edge include standard dual-zone climate control and a ten-way power driver seat across each trim. Ford also gives the base SE trim some love with the standard 8-inch screen that replaces the smaller 4-inch screen. Finally, for those of you with CDs, Ford has discontinued the CD player on all trims. Let’s see if these updates can continue to make the 2020 Ford Edge a contender.

2020 Ford Edge Powertrain

The 2020 Edge 2.0-liter turbocharged engine provides power for every trim except for the ST. Its 250 horsepower is as good or better than other SUVs in its class and has a good amount of torque to move it quickly to 60 mph in 7 seconds as it charges through the 8-speed transmission.

For something entirely more exhilarating, we recommend the Ford Edge ST that comes with a 335-horsepower twin-turbo V6. The 2.7-liter powerplant is refined and powerful enough for the Lincoln Nautilus and Ford F-150, so we figure it will do pretty well here. Moreover, should you choose to press the accelerator to the firewall, the Edge ST will reach 60 mph in 5.7 seconds on the way to a 130-mph top speed. So yeah, it’s quick.

The 2020 Ford Edge’s multi-link suspension works well in soaking up imperfections, and Ford has done an excellent job keeping the sound at bay in the interior. Handling isn’t going to be like a sports car, but the Edge has received an improved steering feel over the last few years and won’t embarrass you in corners.

The Edge ST further amps everything up in the ride and handling category with sharper suspension, a selectable sport mode, and optional brake and handling packages. It’s the real deal.

Towing & Payload

With the 2.0-liter, you’re going to be limited to towing a category standard 1500 lbs if you tow anything at all – and most people won’t. However, the ST has a 3,500 lb towing capacity with its powerful twin-turbo V6. It also comes with a standard class II towing package and trailer sway control.

2020 Ford Edge Fuel Economy & MPG

Although not the most fuel-efficient engine, the 2020 Ford Edge’s 2.0-liter turbo received a decent EPA rating of 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. In addition, the ST doesn’t take too much of a hit for the additional horsepower as it is rated 26 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

SUVs are great for carrying people and cargo. So, whether it’s an afternoon’s worth of shopping or a trip to the beach with the kids and dog, the 2020 Ford Edge will have the space for you.

With each seat occupied, you’ll have just a hair under 40 cubic feet of cargo space behind the 2nd row. That’s considerably more than an Equinox (29.9 cu-ft), Santa Fe (35.9 cu-ft), or RAV4 (37.6 cu-ft). With the second row down, you get 73 cubic feet of total cargo room, which is pretty decent when compared to the Outback’s leading 75 cubic foot total.

Aside from cargo room, the passenger space is excellent for four people and marginal for five. Unfortunately, as comfortable as you might be, Ford still hasn’t updated the materials in the Edge to match what shows up in the companies’ newer models. As a result, pieces don’t fit as well together and, even though we like the 8-inch touchscreen and controls accessibility, the dash looks dated. Even with all that, the seats are comfortable for short or long drives and Ford does an excellent job keeping road and wind noise at hushed levels inside the Edge.

2020 Ford Edge Entertainment & Technology

The 2020 Ford Edge’s 8-inch touchscreen and easy-to-use SYNC 3 infotainment system software will impress you. Although not as sleek looking as much of the competition, the inset screen does offer some protection from glare, which is nice. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work well, and there’s wireless charging available as an option or standard depending on the trim you choose. Finally, of course, everyone gets a Wi-Fi hotspot and, as long as you get the service plan, it can lessen anxiety if you miss being at the office while on vacation.

Safety Features

The 2020 Ford Edge upped the driver assistance game this year with more standard Ford Co-Pilot360 features. Now, every trim gets a minimum of automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assists. While you never want to test out those assist features, if things go sideways, you should know that the NHTSA awarded the Edge a 5-star rating and IIHS named it as a Top Safety Pick.

Its silver 18-inch wheels and black exterior trim give it a purposeful and athletic stance, while LED daytime running, and taillights accent the bold styling. The interior comes standard with dual-zone climate controls, keyless access, and an 8-inch touchscreen with SYNC 3 infotainment. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Cloth seats are standard with a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and 60/40 second row. In addition, occupants are protected by a standard Ford Co-Pilot360 safety suite. SEL – $34,355

The SEL trim adds a few more things to the base Ford Edge SE package. While the Ford Edge SEL is mechanically similar and the 18-inch wheels stay the same size, the SEL exterior receives body-colored trim to replace the standard black trim of an SE. In addition, LED signature lighting and fog lights plus integrated side mirror turn signals approach lights are standard.

Inside, the SEL gets heated front seats, and the passenger gains a six-way power seat. The sound system is upgraded with a premium nine-speaker audio package. Adaptive cruise with stop and go is standard, as is Ford’s innovative Evasive steering. Evasive steering uses a camera system to detect slowed or stopped vehicles and works to actively steer the car and avoid a collision.

2020 Ford Edge Titanium - carsforsale.com

Titanium – $38,100

Ford’s Edge Titanium adds 19-inch nickel-plated aluminum wheels with optional 20-inch replacements. In addition, the Titanium trim has conveniences like a standard hands-free liftgate, remote start, and wireless device charging inside. Leather seating adds to the luxury image of Ford’s Titanium trim, and you can also choose to add ventilation for the front and heated seats for the second row. The best upgrade is Bang & Olufsen’s 12-speaker sound system and acoustic laminated glass, making the interior an even better place to be.

2020 Ford Edge ST - carsforsale.com
2020 Ford Edge ST - carsforsale.com

ST – $43,265

The 2020 Ford Edge ST is the top-of-the-line and high-performance trim if you like power. The ST upgrades the engine to a 2.7-liter V6 that pumps out 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque that flows through a standard all-wheel-drive system. Black badging and trim are added to the exterior, plus the Edge ST rides on standard 20-inch wheels. An optional ST performance package includes beefy 21-inch gloss black aluminum wheels, front and rear vented disk brakes, plus unique front rotors. Inside, you sit in sport-oriented seats.

Warranties

Hyundai and Kia have set the standards for warranties, and, surprisingly, few companies have followed. Ford still offers a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty on the 2020 Ford Edge coupled with a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Nothing groundbreaking here. And don’t expect any extras since Ford also doesn’t have complimentary maintenance.

What we think

The basic structure and materials of the 2020 Ford Edge have been around since 2011. Thankfully, Ford has done an admirable job updating the exterior and interior to battle the competition over the years. As a result, the Edge takes a little and makes a lot of comfort, cargo space, and everyday livability. Even if you don’t choose the sport-oriented powerhouse of an ST, the SEL trim will give you more than what you need as a great family SUV.
