2020 Honda Accord: Is This Automotive Perfection?

The 2020 Honda Accord offers two motors. It offers an automatic or a stick. It even offers a hybrid. These are just a few reasons it’s a great all-around sedan.

What’s New for the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Racking up its 22nd consecutive 10 Best win, the 2020 Honda Accord is the standard-bearer for midsize sedans. All-new in 2018, the only notable vehicle changes are on the Hybrid version. When it’s running 100% electric and nearly silent, a new Acoustic Vehicle Alert System activates to enhance awareness for pedestrians and cyclists.

Though there are few vehicle updates, the awards continue to pile up. It was named the Top Rated Sedan this year while also being handed the 5-Year Cost to Own trophy due to the lowest projected ownership cost in its segment. None of this is surprising as the Accord has been the retail best-selling midsize sedan for over 40 years.

As the lone holdout, Honda makes enthusiasts happy everywhere by offering the only midsize sedan with a manual transmission. Paired with the beefier, 252 horse motor and multi-link rear suspension nets Honda’s sublime driving experience you should feel to believe. That being said, the CVT and 1.5-liter pairing gets the job done and the 10-speed automatic is light years ahead of old-school 4- and 5-speed autos in terms of efficiency and smoothness.

Weighing in at around 3100 pounds, the 2020 Honda Accord is a relative flyweight on the handling front. If you’re looking at the Touring version, don’t miss the trim-exclusive adaptive dampers. By varying the level of damping fluid and modifying shock valving, they can adjust handling characteristics based on selected drive mode. The Hybrid packs on a few hundred more pounds due to the battery pack, but thanks to its location the center of gravity is lowered resulting in a more planted feel behind the wheel.

2020 Honda Accord Fuel Economy & MPG

While it’s busy making award headlines, the 2020 Accord is quietly crushing fuel-economy figures. No matter the engine and transmission combo, you won’t find a model that achieves less than 30 mpg on the highway. LX models, with the CVT and 1.5-liter motor should see 30 miles per gallon in the city. Though manuals used to be known for squeezing a bit more efficiency than automatics, the 10-speed auto edges the 6-speed manual when hooked up to the 2.0-liter engine. City/highway figures for the automatic are 23/34 versus 22/32 with the manual. Unsurprisingly, the Accord Hybrid is by far the fuel economy leader with 48 mpg around town and 47 on the highway.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

2020 Accords are spacious vehicles as evidenced by nearly 17 cubes of cargo volume. Folding rear seats only improve on this. Cloth seating is standard though leather can be optioned as well as heated and cooled front seats. Even rear outboard passengers are offered heated cushions. Interior ambient lighting dresses up the space and rain sensing wipers make wet weather driving easy on the owner. Available Smart Entry keyless operation, a moonroof and dual zone climate control further the occupant coddling.

Entertainment & Technology

You’ll find a touchscreen infotainment screen in all Accords, but the largest 8” display comes only with the Sport trim and above. Apple and Android automotive tech is in there and an available Wi-Fi hotspot plus Qi wireless charging keeps everyone connected. A head up display can be found on Touring models but remote start functionality and HD radio is available lower down the trim tree. HondaLink is a suite of remote services that allow for locking/unlocking, stolen vehicle tracking and automatic collision notifications via smartphone.

Safety Features

All 2020 Honda Accord models are an IIHS Top Safety Pick for good reason. The suite of driver-assistance aids, known as Honda Sensing, is standard equipment. Automatic high beams, a multi-angle rearview camera and driver attention monitor are also included across the lineup. Eight airbags and Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure pile on to earn a 5-star crash test rating from NHTSA.

LX – $24,800

Equipped with the 192 horsepower 4-cylinder and CVT, LX model Accords can hit almost 40 mpg on the highway and benefit from the baked-in goodness of Honda’s handling prowess. Cloth seats, dual zone climate control, and a folding rear-bench get the interior basics done. The touchscreen Display Audio interface is 7” in width here and features Bluetooth connectivity plus Pandora compatibility, amongst other things. 17” alloy wheels are a nice look for the base model while LED headlights are complimented by automatic high-beam control.

2020 Honda Accord Hybrid - carsforsale.com
2020 Honda Accord Hybrid - carsforsale.com

Hybrid – $26,400

As the mileage champ, Accord Hybrid blends an inline-4 gas engine with a pair of electric motors and 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. That battery is situated under the rear seats so the nearly 17 cubic feet of cargo space is unchanged. Another unchanged aspect to the Hybrid is how much it resembles the gas-powered stablemates. Aside from wheels and some badges, it’s not immediately obvious you’re driving a hybrid, which some buyers will find attractive. Low rolling resistance tires, multiple levels of regenerative braking, and an EV-only drive mode encourage owners to wring out as much efficiency as possible.

2020 Honda Accord Sport - carsforsale.com
2020 Honda Accord Sport - carsforsale.com

Sport – $27,460

If you want the stick, buy the Sport. In fact, you can choose between the smaller, 1.5-liter engine with a CVT or the larger, 2.0-liter motor with either a 10-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. The infotainment screen bumps up to 8” with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Opting for the bigger power plant brings a moonroof, heated front seats, and remote engine start. No matter what powertrain you select, 19” wheels and exclusive paint options like San Marino Red set the Accord Sport apart.

2020 Honda Accord EX - carsforsale.com
2020 Honda Accord EX - carsforsale.com

EX – $28,700

Middle-of-the-road EX models have loads of features like HD radio, SiriusXM capability, a sunroof, and lumbar support on the driver’s seat. Heating elements are added to the exterior mirrors along with driver and front passenger cushions. The driver can power adjust their seat position, literally, 12 ways to Sunday. If you need more flexibility with cargo, the rear seat split-folds in a 60/40 configuration and like all models, Honda Sensing is standard safety equipment.

2020 Honda Accord EX-L - carsforsale.com
2020 Honda Accord EX-L - carsforsale.com

EX-L – $31,200

From the EX-L and up, the sole engine offering is a turbocharged two-liter making a healthy 252 horses and paired with a 10-speed automatic. Blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert works with parking sensors to simplify low speed maneuvers. Inside, leather trims the surfaces and the front passenger picks up power adjustability to their seat. There’s also 10 stereo speakers putting out 450 watts of melodious music.

2020 Honda Accord Touring - honda.news.com
2020 Honda Accord Touring - honda.news.com

Touring – $37,030

Top-dog Accord Touring comes with all the bells and whistles. A built in Wi-Fi hotspot and HondaLink make it easy for owners to tap into Amazon Key, which enables in-vehicle package deliveries. Adaptive dampers adjust shock valving based on the driver-selectable Normal and Sport modes. A head up display, Qi wireless charging, and satellite navigation fill out the tech specs. Seemingly simple but tremendously useful is how the side mirrors tilt down, when in reverse, to improve visibility while backing up.

Warranties

Unfortunately, there is no complimentary maintenance included in the purchase of a 2020 Honda Accord. However, you will receive 3 years or 36,000 miles of roadside assistance coverage. The vehicle itself is backed with the same 3 year/36,000-mile warranty period. Powertrain systems have a 5-year warranty or up to 60,000 miles. There is also a corrosion perforation warranty good for 5 years, with unlimited mileage during that time.

What we think

2020 Honda Accord - hondanews.com

2020 Honda Accord – hondanews.com |  Shop 2020 Honda Accord on Carsforsale.com

I am of the opinion that the 2020 Honda Accord Sport with a 6-speed manual and turbocharged 2.0-liter is close to automotive perfection. A blast to drive by yourself with room for family and cargo makes it a compelling proposition.
