2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Powertrain
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan comes with a single powertrain option, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces a hearty 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is the only transmission choice. Power goes to the front wheels or all four when equipped with the optional 4Motion All-Wheel Drive system which costs about $1,500. The 4Motion system comes with different drive modes that adjust how the system responds to match road conditions like dry, snowy, or off-road.
Performance is not breathtaking in the Tiguan, but the engine and transmission work together to deliver good acceleration and solid fuel efficiency. The suspension tuning offers a sporty feel with good handling. The ride is comfortable, but may feel stiffer than its competition; and the larger wheel options can exaggerate the feeling of harshness. The Tiguan weighs more than its competition and this can be felt through the corners or when slowing down.

The 2020 Tiguan delivers decent fuel economy numbers, but does not lead the pack amongst its key rivals. The front-wheel drive models have an EPA rating of 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The heavier all-wheel drive models are rated to 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space
Volkswagen built the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan to offer something that most competitors don’t offer for the compact SUV segment, a third row. Available on models equipped with the all-wheel drive system, the third row gives the Tiguan the ability to seat up to 7 people, which is uncommon at this size. Without the third row, the Tiguan can seat five.
The Tiguan is offered with cloth, leatherette, or leather seat trim and heated front seats are available at the more affordable end of the trim options. If you want to really indulge, the top trim offers a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel. If you want to maximize cargo space, its best to skip the models with the 3rd row. Doing so will give you 37.6 cubic feet of space behind the second-row, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats down and increases cargo space to 73.5 cu-ft. Accessing the cargo area is a breeze thanks to an available motion-activated power rear liftgate that opens by simply waving your foot under the rear bumper with the key fob in your pocket.
Entertainment & Technology
Technology is an area where the VW Tiguan excels and the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit is a great example. This system is an available option and replaces the traditional analog gauges with a digital display that can simulate a traditional speedometer, but can also use the full screen to display the navigation. This makes it easy to see the information you need in a spot that is easy to see. VW also offers an infotainment system in the dash with a large 8-inch touchscreen display. The system includes features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can connect your smartphone and access your favorite apps and media on the go.
Safety Features
Volkswagen bakes some impressive safety features into even the based S model 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. The forward collision warning and emergency braking system will alert you if it detects a potential collision and will even apply the brakes to help slow the vehicle down. The blind spot monitoring technology helps you know when there is another car in your blind spot that you might miss. The IIHS awarded the 2020 Tiguan a Top Safety Pick, with a ‘good’ rating in all of the categories of crashworthiness.

S – $25,965
All 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan models come with the same 184-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The S trim comes with 17-inch wheels, heated side mirrors, LED daytime running lights, cloth upholstery, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system that has integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard advanced safety features include blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking.
SE – $28,115
SE trimmed models gain an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment, wireless phone charging, leatherette seat trim, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and unique 17-inch wheels. The panoramic sunroof is available as optional equipment at the SE level.
SE R-Line Black – $31,315
The SE R-Line Black gains everything from the SE trim and adds on a special R-Line front bumper, 20-inch black aluminum wheels, fog lights, panoramic sunroof, black headliner, and tacks on a front and rear park distance control feature.
SEL – $33,265
Tiguan models with the SEL trim gain a heated steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, adaptive cruise control, power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels, and rain-sensing wipers. The SEL also gains the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit display as standard equipment. Lane assist and adaptive cruise control are added as standard advance safety features as well.
SEL Premium R-Line – $39,915
The top-of-the-line SEL Premium R-Line gets everything from the SEL and adds on adaptive LED headlights, motion-activated power liftgate, leather seats, heated wipers, 20-inch wheels, a nine speaker Fender audio system, and all the R-Line components from the SE R-Line Black.
