The Blazer name was reintroduced in 2019 as a mid-size SUV featuring sharp styling that apes its Camaro stable mate. For 2021, styling and powertrain options stay as is with a variety of content and package reshuffling. A urethane steering wheel replaces the leather-wrapped version that was previously found on L, 1LT, and 2LT trim. RS models now come with navigation as standard equipment while 2LT trim and above now features Chevy’s Safety Assist suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). There are also new colors like Cayenne Orange and Iron Gray and front-wheel-drive models benefit from an available towing package that enables a 4,500-pound towing capacity.
A fun-to-drive SUV
Classy two-tone leather interior
Plenty of standard active safety nets
Enough towing capacity for weekend adventures
Pricey top-spec models have best content
Sharp design and ample power
Chevrolet offers something for everyone on the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer, starting with a 2.5L inline-4 that produces 193 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque. Up the ante with a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, available on 2LT trim and above, that churns our 227 horses and 258 lb-ft of torque. Standard on RS models and available for an extra $500 on higher trims is the 3.6L V6 that cranks it up to 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of twist. All three motors are paired with a 9-speed automatic routing power to the front wheels. Optional AWD is available for around $2000, but you’ll need at least a 2LT model to access it.
An upgrade for 2021 is the availability of a towing package for FWD V6-powered models that offers the hauling capacity figure of 4,500 pounds, previously only possible with AWD. For $650, it includes a heavy-duty cooling system, hitch guidance lines with an available “Hitch View”, trailer sway controller, and 7-pin wiring harness. Otherwise, base 2021 Chevrolet Blazers can handle up to 1,500 pounds of towing.
The three powertrains have closely grouped fuel economy estimates with the 2.0L turbo leading the charge at 22 mpg city and 29 mpg on the highway, in FWD. Adding AWD only impacts the highway figure, which drops to 27 mpg. The big V6, in FWD setup, matches the turbo in both city and highway driving, but the figures drop to 19 mpg and 26 mpg, respectively, with AWD. The base 2.5L engine, which is FWD only, comes in at 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.
There are a host of upmarket cabin amenities like ventilated front seats, automatic heated steering wheel, and heated rear cushions, but you’ll need to pony up for the pricier trims like the RS and Premier. Fortunately, automatic climate control and 64 cubic feet of storage volume, with the rear seats folded, are found across the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer lineup. This 5-seater sports nearly 40” of second row legroom and useful content like an auto-dimming rearview mirror and power tilt-and-telescoping steering column.
Apple and Android smartphone mirroring via 8” touchscreen display headline the standard 2021 Chevrolet Blazer infotainment gear along with a Wi-Fi hotspot. Higher end tech like an HD birds-eye, exterior camera view, wireless charging pad, and navigation are found further up the trim ladder. With the available rear camera mirror, you can toggle between traditional mirror and a live-feed from behind the vehicle. It even has a dedicated washer to keep the lens clean.
Safety Assist, the suite of ADAS found on 2LT trim and above, includes forward collision alert with pedestrian detection, lane keeping with departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automated high beam control. A backup camera, rear seat reminder, and Teen Driver software are lineup-standard, but you’ll need a package on the RS or Premier to access adaptive cruise control and the Safety Alert Seat. Regardless of model, the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer earned a 5-star crash rating from NHTSA.
Like all 2021 Chevrolet Blazers, the entry-level L trim features an 8” touchscreen infotainment interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. A Wi-Fi hotspot and Chevy’s Connected Access with OnStar telematics can all be enabled via subscription. Only available in FWD with the naturally aspirated, 2.5L motor, L trim sports 18” alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, and HID headlights. The cabin is upholstered in Jet Black cloth with dual-zone automatic climate control and active noise cancellation keeping occupants cozy.
Cracking $30,000, the Blazer 1LT has tinted windows, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and access to premium paint like Cayenne Orange Metallic for $395. The infotainment system comes with a trial for SiriusXM satellite radio and a host of package upgrades is on hand like the Convenience and Driver Confidence group. For $1845, it features niceties like heated front seats, a power liftgate, and ADAS that includes blind zone monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse sonar.
2LT comes standard with the turbocharged motor, plus the option for both the V6 mill and AWD. Chevy’s Safety Assist suite of ADAS, which includes automated emergency braking, lane keeping assist, and automatic high beams, is standard fare. Opting for the $1895 Redline Edition adds 20” gloss black wheels with red accents, Redline decals, and a smattering of black-and-red trim.
Exterior content on 3LT models is filled out with black roof rails, auto-dimming side mirrors with integrated turn signals, and a power-operated tailgate with programmable height. The front passenger seats pick up power adjustability and leather is applied to the steering wheel and seating. Blind Zone Alert and a rear cross-traffic monitor bolster the ADAS list with a $1400 Sound & Technology bringing navigation, 120V power, and an HD surround vision camera view.
Leading with a trim-exclusive front grille, the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS trim looks aggressive and can be identified by the rectangular exhaust outlets. 20” wheels with a “Dark Android” finish, “Black Ice” trim, and red RS badges complete the look. Ambient interior lighting let owners set the mood and a $1600 Enhanced Convenience package goes further with ventilated font seats, heated outboard rears, and a power-adjustable steering column.
With the Premier Blazer, chrome bits are added to the outside along with exhaust tips integrated into the rear fascia. 20-inch wheels are standard, but for $1000, you can go bigger with size 21s. The cabin can be draped in black leather or a two-tone black and Maple Sugar scheme that adds a bit of snazz. Memory settings for the side mirrors, steering column, and seats make adjustments a breeze. Then the 8-speaker Bose audio system provides upgraded beats. Tack on the Driver Confidence II package for a digital rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, and LED headlamps.
Chevy includes one complimentary service visit in the first year of ownership under their warranty that also has 3-years/36,000-miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage and 5-years/60,000-miles on the powertrain. 24-hour roadside assistance is ready to help for the first 5 years or 60,000 miles of ownership on the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer too.

There are no shortage of options in the mid-size SUV segment, but the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer manages to stand out with looks and power, especially when driving the RS model and its strong V6 motor. One area Chevrolet could improve on is keeping up with the times and adding a hybrid powertrain option, but this Blazer is still worth a look without it.
