What’s New for the 2021 Ford Mustang?
The biggest news for the 2021 Ford Mustang is the return of the Mach 1, which first appeared in 1969. In present form, the Mach 1 is a track-attack Mustang featuring more power from the 5.0L V8 and a host of handling upgrades. It bridges the performance and price gap between a GT and Shelby GT500 while offering functional aerodynamic improvements and competition ready suspension upgrades. Rev matching has been added to V8-powered models with the manual transmission installed and Ford’s suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), Co-Pilot360, is now standard across the lineup.

2021 Ford Mustang Powertrain
Base EcoBoost Mustangs feature a 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder making 310 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque with the option for 20 more horsepower. In both cases, a 6-speed manual transmission is standard with the option swap it for a 10-speed automatic. Tack on the Handling package to the 2021 Ford Mustang for Pirelli Corsa4 summer tires, Ford’s trick MagneRide suspension, and upgraded brakes.
2021 Ford Mustang GT models sport a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 mill making 460 horses and 420 lb-ft of torque. Mach 1 Mustangs use the same motor but with 480 horses. Both trim levels featuring the 5.0L V8 are paired to a rev-matching 6-speed manual or an optional 10-speed automatic transmission. Shelby GT500s feature a supercharged, 5.2L V8 producing a whopping 760 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque and are fitted only with the 10-speed. All sixth-gen Ford Mustangs use a fully independent suspension and all manner of handling packages are on tap to improve dynamics.
2021 Ford Mustang Fuel Economy & MPG
2021 Ford Mustangs with the EcoBoost four-cylinder engine and automatic transmissions win the fuel economy award with ratings of 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Adding a convertible top drops those figures a couple points while stepping into the GT brings them down to 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway with the 10-speed. All the power in the GT500 drags down fuel efficiency to the worst numbers at only 12 mpg around town and 18 mpg on the open road.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space
Technically, the 2021 Ford Mustang has four seats, but the rear positions are rather cramped. Those rear seats do fold down and a fastback model can stow 13.5 cubic feet of your stuff. Cloth upholstery is standard trim, though leather and suede are available as are tight-fitting Recaro buckets. Dual-zone HVAC controls, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and climatized seats add driver comfort and convenience with touches like the optional engine-spun aluminum instrument panel giving the cabin a decidedly upscale feel.
Entertainment & Technology
A simple 4.2” infotainment display is standard equipment inside the 2021 Ford Mustang, but an 8” touchscreen is available with Ford’s latest software, SYNC 3, running phone integration from Apple and Android. A Wi-Fi hotspot and dual USB ports are lineup standard fare, with higher-level models featuring a completely digital gauge cluster screen. For audiophiles, Bang & Olufsen offers a thumping 12-speaker setup with subwoofer on certain trims.

EcoBoost – $29,045
This entry-level 2021 Ford Mustang is no slouch with a 310 hp, turbocharged I4 under the hood and standard 6-speed manual. For an extra $4800, it’s also available with a convertible top. Front lighting features LED lamps and 17” alloys are standard equipment. Cloth seats and manual HVAC is found inside and the back-to-basics, 4.2” infotainment display is of the non-touchscreen variety though Wi-Fi is included. Power can be amped up with the 330-horse motor in the $6150 High Performance package and the optional 101A package adds SYNC 3, an 8” touchscreen, and phone mirroring software for $2200.
EcoBoost Premium – $34,065
The Premium model punches up the exterior with 18” wheels, hood vents, a rear spoiler, plus heated side mirrors. Cabin improvements include automatic climate control and power-adjustable seats with heating and ventilation. The upgraded infotainment kit is standard with its SYNC 3 capability, 8” screen, and integration with Android and Apple. EcoBoost Premium also offer access to the $2500 201A package that adds a 12” digital instrument panel, heated steering wheel, and premier trim with two-tone leather upholstery and accent stitching.
GT – $37,480
The classic 5.0L V8 powered Mustang GT is denoted by its quad exhaust tips and features LED tail lamps, a rear diffuser, and 18” rims. An auto-dimming rearview mirror is included along with a leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel. A 4.2” monochromatic screen displays infotainment details and dual USBs are on board along with a 6-speaker stereo system. For $6500, the GT Performance package is stacked with 19” black alloys, Brembo brakes, unique chassis tuning, a limited-slip differential, and more.
GT Premium – $41,480
If you want a V8-powered convertible Mustang, you’ll need the GT Premium plus a $5500 upcharge. Heated side mirrors are included as well as ambient interior lighting, premium door trim, and a 9-speaker audio system. The California Special edition adds $2000 to the bill with its special badging and wheels, Miko suede seat inserts, special front grille, and rear pedestal spoiler. There is also an optional Bang & Olufsen stereo and heavily bolstered Recaro sport seats.
Mach 1 – $54,595
Along with a 20 hp boost under the hood, Mach 1 Mustangs sport 19” wheels, a performance rear spoiler, bright-finished 4.5” exhaust tips, and unique fascias front and rear. Illuminated doorsill scuff plates and a hand-stitched center console dress up the interior with the cue ball shift knob and serialized chassis number plate showing off the limited production aspect of this model. Standard tech includes the 12” digital gauge cluster and SYNC 3 with its 8” touchscreen.
Mach 1 Premium – $56,495
At the Mach 1 Premium level, the Mustang features a heated steering wheel and climatized leather seats with memory settings. Like the base Mach 1, black painted Brembo brake calipers are seen outside and the inside is equipped with premium carpeted floor mats, a trim-exclusive gauge pack, and the optional 10-speed automatic for $1595. For $3750, the Handling package brings 1” wider wheels, a larger front splitter, and additional enhancements from the GT500. And only the Mach 1 Premium allows for the Appearance package with its unique Fighter Jet Gray paint job, orange-finished brake calipers, and orange accents throughout.
GT500 – $74,095
Honoring its Shelby name, the GT500 goes full-tilt wild with 20” wheels, a gaping front fascia, and plenty of Cobra badges. Only available with the automatic transmission, the interior has a leather and Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, model-exclusive dash finish, and the full suite of tech. Factory hand-painted racing stripes are an option for a cool ten grand and for another $18,500, the Carbon Fiber Track package nets carbon fiber wheels with Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 rubber, adjustable strut top-mounts, and more.
