What’s New for the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado?

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado features a mid-cycle update after this fourth-gen truck was unveiled in 2019. Chevy’s bread-and-butter, the Silverado family tree goes back 60 years with the C/K line, a history we discuss here. For 2022, the front end is facelifted and the interior features richer materials and a more horizontal style. LT models and above now come standard with a 12.3” configurable digital gauge cluster that abuts a 13.4” infotainment display. In driver-assistance news, GM’s Super Cruise hands-free tech can now be had and don’t miss the all-new ZR2, a serious off-road machine.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado Powertrain

Your powertrain wish is Silverado’s command with four different offerings from the base, 2.7L turbocharged four to a pair of V8s and Duramax diesel. The 2.7L stout, making 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque but there’s no denying a V8 for some truck buyers. The 5.3L V8 option puts out 355 hp with 383 lb-ft of torque the beefier 6.2L variant turned up to 420 horses and 460 torques. A 3.0L turbodiesel inline-6 can be optioned as well, it makes 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, helping the Silverado earn a spot on this list of best Chevys. Aside from an 8-speed automatic paired with the four-cylinder, every motor works with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Rear-wheel drive is standard, except on the Trail Boss and ZR2 models that only come with 4WD. You can add the 4×4 system – and it’s Autotrac transfer case – for about $3000 to the rest of the lineup, but if your driving needs lean off-road, don’t miss those aforementioned 4WD-only models. Trail Boss trim sports a 2” lift, while the ZR2 is an off-road assault vehicle with trick Multimatic dampers and special bumpers for improved approach and departure angles.

Towing & Payload

Truck buyers typically have trailering requirements, an area the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado shines. 9,500 pounds of capacity is impressive by itself but is in fact the lowest towing capability figure, found on 2.7L-equipped models. Both the 6.2L V8 and 3.0L Duramax diesel can lug up to 13,300 pounds, part of the reason this truck is on our list of best vehicles for holding their value. There is a tremendous array of trailering gear on offer, from a bed view camera to trailer blind spot monitoring.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado Fuel Economy & MPG

2022 Chevrolet Silverado - media.chevrolet.com

For the best fuel economy, get the Duramax diesel that achieves 23 mpg around town and 31 on the highway. However, those figures drop to 20/23 mpg, respectively, when equipped with 4WD. The 2.7L engine is rated for 19 mpg city and 22 mpg highway driving, both of which drop by 2 mpg with 4WD. Expect 16 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway for 5.3L V8 equipped Silverados, and subtract two from both ratings on 4×4 models. The 4WD-only 6.2L V8 fares the worst with EPA estimates of 15/20 mpg in city/highway driving.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

Three cab configurations – regular, double and crew – mean you can seat 3, 5 or 6 passengers. If you’ll be carting the family around, Crew cabs, with their four full-size doors and 43” of rear legroom, are the way to go. The base work truck Silverado, geared to jobsites, has a vinyl interior but as you move up the trim ladder, you’ll find a pickup transformed into a luxury cruiser.

LT models are outfitted with automatic climate control, heated front seats and the option for power-operated rear glass. Top-spec High Country trim goes all out with ventilated front seats, heated rears and perforated leather upholstery. On the cargo front you’ll find rear, under seat storage and bins throughout the cabin. Out back, the bed is available in 5 ½-, 6 ½- and 8-foot lengths and the Multi-Flex tailgate makes loading and securing your gear a breeze.

Entertainment & Technology

While base Silverados feature a 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, Chevy is touting the 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and 13.4-inch infotainment screen found on LT models and above. Impressive looks are backed up with useful features like Google built-in and wireless smartphone mirroring. As you move through the roster of trim levels, you’ll find a Bose stereo and wireless charging on the LTZ. For the best tech, select the technology package that boasts a 15-inch color head-up display and digital rearview mirror.

Safety Features

Safety Assist is the bowtie brands’ suite of driver aids that comes standard across the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado lineup. The six systems include forward collision alert with automated emergency braking and lane keeping assist with departure warning. Adaptive cruise control can be optioned but the headlining tech this year is super cruise, a semi-autonomous driving system that allows hands-off-the-wheel driving – even while pulling a trailer.
