New in 2021, the F-Series has been in production for nearly 75 years now. Today, it can be built as a work truck, comfortable daily driver, or straight luxo-barge costing over $80,000. And coming soon is the 100% electric 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, which you can read about here. Some new features for 2022 are onboard scales that display payload weight and continuously controlled dampers on high-spec models. New with last year’s model, the EcoBoost Hybrid offers the best fuel economy in the lineup and the Black Appearance package is now more widely available.
A hybrid with 570 lb-ft of torque
FX4, Tremor, and Raptor offer 3 off-road flavors
Stow the console shifter for a flat workspace
Exceptional 12-inch touchscreen
Power Stroke Diesel option is gone
There is an F-150 to suit anyone
The 2022 Ford F-150 has six engine options, all of which pair with a 10-speed automatic driving the rear wheels or, optionally, all four. Naturally aspirated engine options consist of the base 3.3L V6 with 290 hp with 265 lb-ft of torque or the classic 5.0L V8 making a healthy 400 horsepower (hp) and 410 lb-ft of torque. There are three twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 motors to choose from; 2.7L with 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, 3.5L with 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, or the Raptor-only High Output 3.5L that makes 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Fuel-efficiency minded buyers should check out the 430-horse, 3.5L EcoBoost Hybrid that makes a heady 570 lb-ft of torque.
Fitted with the 3.5L EcoBoost mill, a 2022 Ford F-150 tops out at 14,000 pounds of towing capacity and 3,325 pounds of payload. To achieve this, you’ll need a variety of equipment like the Max Trailer Tow package that brings special axles, a Class IV hitch receiver and trailer brake controller amongst other content. There is a long list of towing and cargo bed related equipment to be found here with highlights including the integrated bed scales, ProPower built-in generator and Pro Trailer Backup Assist.
If you want to stretch a gallon of gas, the hybridized EcoBoost option offers a respectable 25 mpg in both city and highway driving but if you’re considering a used model, which we look at here, there is no hybrid option. The smaller, 2.7L EcoBoost comes in at 20/26 mpg for city/highway driving, while both the 3.3L V6 and 5.0L V8 achieve 19 mpg around town and 24 on the highway. With the 3.5L EcoBoost, expect figures of 18 and 24 mpg for city and highway driving with 4WD dropping these figures across the board. Neither the Tremor nor Raptor are going to win fuel economy contests with the Raptor dropping under 20 mpg in both city and highway driving.
Ranging from cloth and vinyl floors to two-tone heated, ventilated and massaging leather-wrapped thrones, the 2022 F-150 has a cabin for everyone. SuperCrew models feature a flat load floor with available locking underseat storage in the second row. Dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof and power-operated rear glass are all options that ensure a just-right atmosphere. Other niceties like a heated steering wheel and rear seats can also be had, furthering the upscale style.
Depending on trim, the 2022 Ford F-150 comes in Regular Cab, SuperCab or SuperCrew; the latter of which has four full-size doors. A trio of bed lengths are on tap; 5 ½ foot, 6 ½ foot or 8 foot. Certain models like the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor are only offered as a SuperCrew Cab with 5 ½’ bed.
The level of tech in a 2022 F-150 is staggering from the dual 12” displays to an 18-speaker B&O stereo and navigation. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a Wi-Fi hotspot are lineup standard but XL and XLT models come with an 8” central display. Moving up the trim hierarchy unlocks features like MyKey remote connectivity and integrated navigation.
Ford’s suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, Co-Pilot360 2.0, is included on the XLT and up. It includes 6 safety systems including Pre-Collision Assist, Lane-Keeping Systems, and Post-Collision Breaking. The Assist 2.0 suite tacks on Evasive Steering and Intersection Assist. Active 2.0 brings BlueCruise allowing hands-free driving on select highways, and Active Park Assist which will parallel park your F-150 by holding down a button.
The work truck, F-150 XL has steel wheels, black plastic trim and manual controls for windows and door locks. The 3.3L V6 is standard though virtually every other engine can be optioned as can 4WD. An 8” touchscreen manages the SYNC 4 infotainment system including Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While the 2022 F-150 has a huge list of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) available, base XL models make do with Pre-Collision Assist with Automated Emergency Braking.
The main upgrade for an XLT are its 17” alloys, chrome trim and powered operation of vehicle systems. Carpet replaces black vinyl floors inside; cruise control is added, as is Ford’s Co-Pilot360 2.0 suite of ADAS. It includes automatic high beams, Lane Keeping System and Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert.
Lariat trim adds the 2.7L EcoBoost V6, 18” wheels and LED lighting all around including the fog lamps that swivel in corners for better visibility. Cabin upgrades include dual-zone automatic climate control, power-sliding rear glass and leather seating with heat and ventilation up front. From this model and up (Tremor excepted), the 12” gauge cluster screen and infotainment touchscreen are standard.
With the 3.5L EcoBoost motor, skid plates, 33” A/T rubber and unique suspension tune, the F-150 Tremor may not quite be a Raptor; however, it does have serious off-road capability. The features list includes Trail Turn Assist for tight maneuvering, standard 4WD with low range, Hill Descent Control and an electronically locking rear differential.
Swaddled in Mesa leather with loads of King Ranch logos throughout the cabin, there is no mistaking this model. It comes standard with the 5.0L V8 motor and special King Ranch wheels. Other notable content includes Dynamic Bending headlights, power-adjustable pedals and Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0. This upgraded set of ADAS adds systems like Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control and Navigation.
Satin aluminum trim sets off Platinum models as do the 20” alloys and power-deployable running boards on SuperCrew configurations. The theme continues inside with a Platinum-only two-lone leather scheme featuring a pretty shade of tan that Ford calls “Carmelo”. A wireless charging pad is on hand as are front seats with massaging capability.
If you plan to enter the Baja 1000, or just want to hit jumps on the golf course, a Raptor is for you. Fitted with the High Output 3.5L EcoBoost that cranks out 450 horses, it is a BEAST. 24 inches of rear spring travel, FOX Racing shocks and flared everything comes standard. Or you can pony up $5000 for the 37 Performance package to add 37” rubber on bead lock-ready rims and blue leather Recaro seats.
It is certainly not cheap, but the Limited F-150 is fully loaded with 22” rims, Onboard Scales, a panoramic sunroof and variable rate dampers. There is also the 18-speaker B&O audio system and special Admiral Blue leather-swathed cabin with heated, ventilated and massaging front seats. The list of amenities justifying this price goes on…and on…and on.
Ford’s warranty covers the vehicle for 3 years or 36,000 miles and powertrain components for a 5-year/60,000-mile period. Unlike some of the competition, Ford does not include any complimentary maintenance.
