This fourth-generation, 2022 Ford Ranger was new to American buyers in 2019 after an 8-year hiatus. This midsize pickup has had an interesting journey since inception in 1983, a history your can read up on here. It offers plenty of rugged utility in a more manageable package than its giant-sized stablemate, the F-150 that we review here. Dipping into their Nineties-tastic archives, Ford revives the Splash package this year with a, uh, splashy look featuring body graphics and tangerine dream accents. There will also be limited edition Splash models arriving throughout the year with just a few hundred of each style. Snow Edition is coming first to be followed by Forest and Sand variants.

With the 2022 Ranger, you can have any powertrain as long as it’s the 2.3L EcoBoost inline-4 paired with a 10-speed automatic. This is in contrast with competition like the new GMC Canyon, as reviewed here, that offers a pair of engines to choose from. However, Ford’s turbocharged four is a stout mill, making 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque spinning the rear wheels, though you can tack on 4WD with electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case for about $4000.
The Ranger body can be built in either SuperCab configuration with a pair of half-sized rear doors and 6-foot bed or SuperCrew with four full-sized doors and a 5-foot bed. Unlike Ford’s new Maverick pickup with unibody construction, which sold out quickly as discussed here, the Ranger is a traditional body-on-frame pickup with leaf-sprung rear suspension. It makes for stout utility but don’t expect a cushy ride. If you plan to get off the paved path, Ford offers a range of 4×4 upgrades to lend a hand from the FX2 package with off-road tires to the Tremor with full skid plates and a Terrain Management System (TMS). TMS has selectable drive modes including Mud/Ruts and Sand that alter transmission and throttle calibrations to make your dirt road adventures easier.
Featuring a fully boxed frame made with high-strength steel and rear leaf springs, a 2022 Ranger can pull as much as 7,500 pounds. Doing so requires the $495 Trailer Tow package that adds a 4/7-pin wiring harness and Class IV hitch receiver to the lineup standard trailer sway control. Max payload tops out at 1,905 pounds and blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage is available.
Ford employs idle start/stop tech on the Ranger’s EcoBoost setup that achieves 21 mpg in city driving and 26 on the highway for two-wheel-drive models. Adding 4WD drops those figures to 20 and 24 mpg, respectively. The Tremor package, with meatier tires and heavier running gear, drops to 19 mpg in both city and highway driving.
For those using the Ranger for simple utility, the SuperCab body features rear seats that can be removed to open up a large storage area. If you anticipate carting more than two people around however, the SuperCrew will sit up to five passengers and includes storage areas under the rear bench. While leather upholstery is found on the top-spec Lariat trim, XL and XLT come with cloth fabric seating and in the case of the entry-level XL, vinyl flooring.
Power windows and locks are standard equipment but you’ll need a package or at least an XLT model to access dual-zone automatic climate control. Other cabin amenities like heated seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror and sliding rear glass are available higher up the trim ladder. The largest 6-foot cargo bed requires a SuperCab Ranger and can handle 52 cubic feet of your stuff. Both setups come with integrated cargo area tie-downs but the SuperCrew’s smaller 5-foot box drops in overall volume to 43 cubic feet.
Entry-level Rangers do come with Bluetooth connectivity but no central touchscreen. You can option it with the 101A package or step up to an XLT model that is fitted with an 8-inch infotainment display – on par with a Toyota Tacoma – running Ford’s SYNC 3 software. Apple and Android smartphone mirroring tech are baked in and all trim levels feature a Wi-Fi hotspot and Applink for remote access to door locks and service scheduling. High-end tech like a Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker stereo and dual 4-inch gauge cluster screens are available for added cost.
Along with a host of airbags and automatic post-crash alert, every 2022 Ranger comes with forward collision warning and automated emergency braking. XLT and Lariat models tack on blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, automatic high-beams and a lane keeping system that includes a driver attention monitor. With the Lariat, reverse parking sensors are included but for adaptive cruise control and forward-facing sonar, you’ll need the $995 Technology package.
Sporting 16-inch steelies, black exterior trim and manually-adjustable side mirrors, base Ranger XL models are all about the basics. This rings true inside with black cloth upholstery and vinyl flooring, though power windows and locks as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot are included. There is no shortage of upgrade packages like the STX group that brings 17-inch lack alloys, the 8-inch infotainment screen and dual-zone automatic climate control.
A new option on the 2022 Ranger that you won’t find on a 2021 Ranger – reviewed here – is the throwback Splash package. It’s only available on the XLT or Lariat and adds special matte black wheels, decals and orange accents. Standard highlights for the XLT include a power-locking tailgate, alloy wheels, carpeted floors and SYNC 3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can upgrade creature comforts with the $2450 302A package that adds power-adjustable and heated front seats, sliding rear glass and heated side mirrors.
Full LED lighting, 18-inch wheels and leather upholstery are notable improvements on the top-spec Lariat trim. For all the bells and whistles, tick the 501A package box. It features navigation, adaptive cruise control, the Bang & Olufsen sound system and remote engine start. You can option the Tremor package for $4290 to make the 2022 Ranger as off-road ready as possible with an extra inch of ground clearance, limited slip differential, special rims, upfitter switches and Miko suede-trimmed seats. The black and red Tremor graphic package is extra, but adds killer visual flair.
Ford’s warranty includes 3-years/36,000-miles of basic coverage and a 5-year/60,000-mile term on the powertrain and roadside assistance. There is no complimentary maintenance but aluminum body panels and paint adhesion are under warranty for 5 years with no mileage qualifier.

The Ranger is a great alternative to Ford’s F-150 for those that don’t need, or want, such a huge truck. Strong towing capacity and a lower price point make it appealing with plenty of tech and amenity upgrades for those that desire them. Personally, I like the base XL model for its back-to-basics simplicity and steel wheels. Option the SuperCrew cab with 4WD and you have loads of utility for a little more than $30,000.
