Thoroughly refreshed, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 features a bold front fascia treatment and a pair of new trim levels. The AT4X adds premium feels to the regular AT4 and the Denali Ultimate stickers at eighty grand with a commensurate level of fanciness. Nearly every model now features a fully digital gauge cluster and larger 13” infotainment screen with Google Built-In. There is more power from the 2.7L turbo-4, the 4.3L V6 goes away, and the Duramax diesel gains 4,000 pounds of towing capacity. An exciting feature from the driver-assistance front is the application of GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving tech that can drive for you, even while trailering.

The standard 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder is more powerful for 2022, making 310 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic routes power to the rear wheels with the option for 4×4 via 2-speed transfer case. An available 3.0L Duramax inline-6 turbodiesel puts down 277 horses and a hearty 460 lb-ft of torque. The “small” V8 option in the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is a 5.3L affair with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of twist on tap, while the 6.2L V8 variant cranks things up to 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The diesel and both V8s work with a 10-speed transmission. The Sierra 1500 is also available with a RWD or 4WD drivetrain.
For the max towing capacity of 13,200 pounds, you’ll want Duramax power though the 6.2L V8 isn’t far behind at 13,000 pounds when equipped with the Max Trailering package. Loads of tech lends a towing hand with up to 14 camera angles like Bed View and Transparent Trailer. The Super Cruise hands-free system is capable of operating while pulling a load and GCW Alert signals when the maximum weight has been reached. A fun optional feature is the KICKER audio system integrated into the MultiPro tailgate.
2022 GMC Sierra 1500 figures are not yet available from the EPA, but last year’s fuel-efficiency ratings provide a close idea of what to expect. 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway are what a RWD Sierra with the 2.7L can achieve. The Duramax sips fuel the best with ratings of 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Equipped with the 5.3L V8, the Sierra should be in the neighborhood of 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, while the 6.2L version only drops by 1 mpg in the highway rating. Adding 4WD reduces fuel economy by 1-3 mpg across the board.
2022 GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab models with four full size doors can comfortably accommodate up to three people in the rear seats while the front row can be configured with a bench or dual buckets. Heated seats are available on Elevation trim and above, but for the 16-way power-adjustable versions equipped with heat, cooling, and massage functions, at least an AT4X is required. Other available cabin amenities include a sunroof, leather upholstery, ash wood trim, and automatic climate controls.
There is no shortage of entertainment or technology on the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 as evidenced by the 12” digital gauge cluster with full-screen navigation capability. Google Built-In and wireless smartphone integration comes with the 13” infotainment touchscreen interface and a multi-color, 15” HUD will project key vehicle information onto the windshield. AT4X and Denali Ultimate models feature a 12-speaker Bose audio system with Centerpoint surround sound and noise compensation tech to cancel out background sound.
GMC Safety Pro is standard on the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 and bundles advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like automatic high beams, forward collision alert, and a following distance indicator. The headlining Super Cruise tech is standard on the Denali Ultimate and offers hands-off driving on over 200,000 miles of mapped roadways in North America. There are also a host of towing related systems like Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert that accounts for the length of your trailer when changing lanes.
Replacing base Sierra trim from the 2021 model, which you can read about here, Sierra Pro slots into the workday category with the 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder and RWD. 4WD can be optioned as can the origami-inspired MultiPro tailgate with six different modes. GMC’s Pro Safety suite of six ADAS is standard along with full exterior LED lighting.
From SLE trim on up, the 12.3” digital gauge cluster and 13.4” infotainment display are standard equipment on the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. Both feature a variety of customizable layouts with Google Built-In offering voice-control of Google Assistant, Maps, and Play Store. As well, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are integrated with wireless connection.
Snappily attired Elevation models sport a monochromatic exterior treatment with a gloss black front grille and black 20” rims. Like Pro and SLE trims, the 5.3L V8 and 3.0L turbodiesel can be optioned as can the Elevation Premium package that adds leather upholstery and heated front seats.
The thundering 6.2L V8 can be accessed with the Sierra SLT, along with standard 20” polished wheels with gray painted accents. Standard fare includes an In-Vehicle Trailering App with pre-departure checklists, trailer light testing, theft alert, and more. 10-way power-adjustable front seats with heat and ventilation are also available.
Off-road ready, the AT4 comes from the factory with an off-road tuned, 2” suspension lift, underbody skid plates, and mud-terrain tires. An auto-locking rear differential and 2-speed AutoTrac transfer case further this mission while the Jet Black and Kalahari interior scheme adds a touch of lux.
Denali is GMC’s long-running premium Sierra offering, which you can read more about here. For 2022, it features the continuously damping Active Ride Control suspension system for a smoother ride. An exclusive chrome grill and available 22” machined wheels with chrome inserts sets the Denali apart from its stable mates. Real open-pore wood trim and brushed aluminum accents inside help justify the price tag and Super Cruise becomes optional at this level.
Take a Silverado ZR2, add a heaping spoonful of Sierra Denali, mix, bake, and out pops the all-new AT4X. Only fitted with the 420-horse 6.2L V8, it features Multimatic spool-valve dampers, electronically controlled front and rear locking differentials, steel transfer case armor, and Terrain mode for one-pedal rock crawling. The massaging seats are just the thing on the drive home from a day on the trail.
New for 2022, Denali Ultimate embraces its inner Sith Lord with a special Vader Chrome grille that truly looks the part. Full-grain Alpine Umber leather with plaited contrast stitching, Paldao wood trim laser-etched with a Mount Denali topo map, 16-way massaging and climatized seats, plus Super Cruise, the HUD, and 12-speaker Bose stereo are just a few of the amenities that make this the ultimate GMC Sierra.
GMC’s vehicle warranty runs for 3 years or 36,000 miles on the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 and includes one complimentary service in the first year of ownership. Gas powertrain coverage lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles and diesel models extend to 5 years or 100,000 miles.
