What’s New for the 2022 Honda Civic?

50 years after its North American debut, the 2022 Honda Civic continues a tradition of small car excellence in an all-new wrapper. America loves the Civic as evidenced by more than 12 million sales since the early 70’s and this 11th generation model offers even more to love, starting with a thoroughly overhauled exterior design.

Gone is the previous models’ busy styling, replaced with simple crisp lines in the Honda “Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum” design language. The theme continues inside with a modern, uncluttered look like the full-width, honeycomb-mesh dashboard element. Engine options are carryovers with mild power bumps but digital displays are larger, driving dynamics have been refined, and more active safety features are added.

For the 2022 Honda Civic, a pair of 4-cylinder engines are available, paired in both cases with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The naturally aspirated version that comes in LX and Sport trim, makes 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Moving up to an EX or Touring model nets the 180 horse, turbocharged power plant. The manual transmission is gone from the sedan (keep an eye out for one in the upcoming hatchback), but the CVT features Step-Shift programming to simulate physical gear changes for a more familiar driving experience.

A host of improvements to the new Honda Civic chassis promise more refined handling and ride comfort. The wheelbase is stretched 1.4”, Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure has been stiffened, and the rear track is a half-inch wider all of which contribute to better NVH metrics and more planted handling. As well, the front struts have been retuned, the front subframe is more rigid, and rear suspension bushings are revised all in the name of better feel behind the wheel.

2022 Honda Civic Fuel Economy & MPG

Already a fuel economy standout, the 2022 Honda Civic sports a new idle-stop system and catalytic converter for better efficiency. Additionally, braking components are refreshed to reduce rolling resistance, turbo plumbing is updated for better flow, and the transmission has an improved pump all in the name of squeezing more mileage from every gallon. EX models are the Civic champs with ratings of 33 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway. The “worst” performer is a Sport model at 30/37 mpg estimates for city/highway driving.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

Cloth upholstery is the name of the game unless you pony up for a Touring model with its black leather seating. All models are equipped with automatic climate controls and folding rear seat, but with the EX model, HVAC is dual zoned, the front seats are heated, and the back row has a 60/40 split. Other occupant conveniences in the top-spec Touring trim include an auto-dimming rearview mirror and power adjustment for the driver’s and front passenger’s seat.

Entertainment & Technology

2022 Honda Civic models feature a 7” touchscreen infotainment interface with Android and Apple smartphone mirroring tech as standard equipment, which is upgraded to a 9” screen and wireless integration on Touring models. The HondaLink app allows owners to check mileage, fuel range, and schedule service with their phone while navigation with real-time traffic is available. The higher end items like a 12-speaker Bose stereo, 10” digital instrument panel, and Qi wireless charging are reserved for Touring trim Civic models.

Safety Features

Ten airbags, including a new frontal system designed to address the issue of head injuries in angled collisions, are spread throughout the cabin. As well, the ACE body structure is enhanced with a new pillar frame and lower firewall structure to route crash energy around the cabin more efficiently. And the standard Honda Sensing suite of ADAS includes collision and road departure mitigation, lane keeping, and departure assist plus traffic jam assist and traffic sign recognition – all in the name of a safer Honda Civic.

LX – $22,695

It’s nice to know buyers can still find a fun-to-drive sedan for under $25,000 in the Civic LX. Equipped with the smaller, 158 horse motor and weighing less than 3,000 pounds, it benefits from the model wide upgrades like a longer wheelbase, revised suspension tuning, and improved steering feel. LED headlights, daytime running lamps, and tail lamps are standard equipment along with body colored door handles and mirror caps. 16” wheels with hubcaps are nothing fancy but they’re certainly inexpensive to replace.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring tech are on tap, controlled via the 7” touchscreen interface. A same-sized driver information display in the gauge cluster provides key vehicle details and owners will appreciate the simplicity of push-button start. Cloth upholstery, in black or gray, is simple but automatic climate controls ensure comfort.

Honda Sensing, the automaker’s suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), is robust standard equipment. It features adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assist, and road departure mitigation to name a few.

Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock works with the key fob to handle locking and unlocking duties hands-free. The stereo system doubles in size from the standard 4-spearkers to an upgraded 8-speaker layout and the interior is spruced up with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob. Metal-look sport pedals and paddle shifters complete the sport-focused styling that can be augmented with an optional, 18” wheel design for $1700.

EX – $25,695

You’ll need at least an EX model to enjoy the more potent, turbocharged mill making 180 horsepower. 17” rims with gloss black inserts add a premium touch and occupants benefit from the slide-and-tilt moonroof. Black cloth is the upholstery of choice with heated front seat cushions and a 60/40 split-fold configuration on the back row. HVAC controls gain dual-zone functionality and the active-safety measures are beefed up with blind spot monitoring.

Touring – $29,295

Sliding in just under 30 grand, the top-spec Honda Civic Touring sedan has trim-exclusive features like a 9” infotainment display and 10” digital instrument panel. Smartphone mirroring integration is wireless as is the Qi charging pad. Navigation with real-time traffic is added and the 12-speaker Bose stereo will make audiophiles happy.

18” wheels with a unique design and gray inserts set the Touring apart as do the heated side mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers and LED fog lamps. Leather seating and power-adjustable front seats with heat are standard equipment as is the rear cross-traffic monitoring software. Low speed braking control and parking sensors round out the driver aids on this trim.

Warranties

Honda’s standard warranty applies to the 2022 Honda Civic with 3 years or 36,000 miles of coverage for the basic vehicle and roadside assistance. The powertrain comes with a 5-year or 60,000-mile warranty term and any corrosion is covered for unlimited mileage over a 5-year period.
