No changes have been made to the 2022 HR-V with a complete redesign on track for 2023.
Outstanding cargo space
Comfortable seating
Fuel sipper
Buzzy powertrain
Noisy Cabin
Snail-like acceleration
We’d love more power
Every Honda HR-V comes with the exact same drivetrain. It consists of a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that develops 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. It then sends that power through a continuously variable transmission and onto either the front wheels alone or all four. To say that this is an underwhelming combination is an understatement of itself.
The HR-V is based on the now-discontinued Honda Fit and while it’s heavier and taller than that car, it’s not much more powerful at all. The result is a vehicle that is just barely fast enough to keep up with most traffic. Steering is by far the best part of the HR-V driving experience as it mimics the sharp response of the Fit. At the same time, it’s numb on center and pedal feedback is no better.
As a whole, the HR-V needs some big improvements in the way it engages drivers and we hope to see those changes for the 2023 model year.
One highlight for the HR-V is fuel economy where it gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway. Adding AWD drops that to a couple of mpg but the lowest combined score for the HR-V is still 28 mpg.
Another huge benefit of the HR-V is its excellent interior. Tall sides make for a spacious interior with excellent headroom, legroom, and shoulder room. Visibility is likewise very impressive in all directions which isn’t the case with the other contenders in this segment.
We like how high-quality the interior feels and looks on the 2022 Honda HRV. Panel gaps are uniform and tight. The materials in all but the base model feel above the average too.
Those who need to haul stuff around in their HR-V will love how versatile this SUV really is. Cargo space is pretty generous with the rear seats in place but put them down and you’ll open up nearly 60 cubic feet of capacity. The HR-V even has its own special party trick called the “Magic Seat’ where the bottom cushion of the back seat actually flips up so that taller cargo like house plants can be transported without having to be leaned over on their side.
The base trim of the HR-V is somewhat underwhelming. Not only does it have a super basic 5-inch radio but it lacks a great deal of the safety features that come on above trims. Once you step up to the Sport, a 7-inch infotainment system becomes standard. It’s equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a couple of USB ports.
The EX and EX-L trims add Honda Sensing, the company’s full suite of advanced driver assistance aids like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and forward collision mitigation. They all do a great job in practice as well which can’t be said for all the cars in this segment.
We wish Honda would provide ADA systems across the lineup. We are glad to report that the NHTSA has awarded the HR-V with a five-star crash test rating. It also did well in IIHS testing but missed out on any awards due to poor headlight safety scores.
The base HR-V gets 17-inch wheels, a cloth interior, a 5-inch infotainment screen, LED brake lights, a single USB port, LED DRLs, and air conditioning.
The Sport trim adds 18-inch wheels, a 7-inch infotainment system, paddle shifters, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lights, roof rails, and a second USB port.
The EX trim level gets the above-mentioned Honda Sensing safety equipment along with proximity keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, satellite radio, and LaneWatch which shows a camera’s view of your blind spot when the passenger side turn signal is active.
The top trim adds an upgraded audio system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and leather upholstery.
Honda offers just about the most basic warranty available on a vehicle in the market. Every HR-V comes with a three-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Honda doesn’t offer any complimentary maintenance on the HR-V either

This little SUV is perfect for the city and for hauling a couple of extra people and cargo. It’s not great to drive so we’d recommend getting the EX or EX-L trim since they’re at least nicer to live with and it’s a good idea to cross-shop the HR-V with rivals like the Nissan Kicks or the Toyota C-HR. At the end of the day, this is a well-made little vehicle with enough good qualities to make up for its shortcomings.
