Entering into its fifth generation, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is an entirely fresh platform update. Jeep updated everything including the chassis, the exterior, and the interior features.
Sincere off-road capability
Standard driver aids
4xe powertrain is great
Cheap feeling interior
Can get very expensive
Convoluted trim structure
Is the Trackhawk coming back?
The new Grand Cherokee is much larger than the outgoing model but to drive it around town you wouldn’t know it. It still feels peppy and that’s true of all three powertrains. An eight-speed automatic transmission feeds power to the rear or all four wheels depending on configuration and we couldn’t find one we didn’t like. Not only does the Grand Cherokee accelerate well but it stops just as confidently and that’s rare for a vehicle of this size. Gear changes are quick and smooth too.
If there’s a complaint with regard to the Grand Cherokee, it’s a lack of poise around corners. Still, that shouldn’t put off most buyers who realize that this large SUV isn’t made to zip around curves quickly. It’s made to handle serious off-road situations and it does that brilliantly. Save for the more luxury-focused trims like the Summit Reserve with its 21-inch wheels, we’d be comfortable taking any Grand Cherokee with 4WD deep into the woods with the confidence that it would easily get us back to civilization.
When properly equipped, this Jeep can tow up to 6,200-pounds. That’s a solid performance among its competitors.
Neither the V6 nor the V8 version of the Grand Cherokee is particularly fuel-efficient. The EPA rates them at 22 and 17 mpg combined respectively. The 4xe gets a combined rating of 23 mpg but can travel up to 25 miles on electric power alone so it scores an MPGe rating of 56.
Trim level dictates the experience in the Grand Cherokee but at the end of the day, none of those experiences will be bad. Even the base Laredo is a comfortable and spacious place to spend time and we really like how well the seats support passengers. The climate control also does a very nice job in most situations. If anything, we’d love it to be a bit more powerful. Higher-end trims like the Overland and Summit have nicer materials though we expected them to feel and look better considering their respective prices.
The Grand Cherokee is also louder inside than we expected for a vehicle in this class. Still, it offers good overall ride comfort, lots of interior space, and excellent cargo room too. Behind the second row are nearly 40 cubic feet of cargo space and that almost doubles if you fold those seats flat. Those who want to escape to the great outdoors with all of their stuff in the back won’t suffer from a lack of space.
Jeep has outfitted the Grand Cherokee with more technology than even some luxury brands but just keep in mind that almost all of the special stuff comes at a big premium. We really love Uconnect as a user interface and it does a great job here too. We also think that the huge passenger infotainment system option is a no-brainer if you’re willing to pay for it. It’ll immediately impress anyone who jumps in your Grand Cherokee.
Off-roading is easier than ever with multiple terrain modes, ascent as well as descent controls, an electronically disconnectable stabilizer bar, and a front camera too. Massaging front seats, ventilated rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof are all available too, and honestly, money no option, they’re excellent features that make last year’s model look much older.
We’re really impressed that Jeep has included so many advanced driver aids like stop & go adaptive cruise control. As of this writing, neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has released any test results with regard to the new Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo starts out buyers with 17-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, a digital gauge cluster, and an 8.4-inch infotainment system featuring both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as six speakers. Every Grand Cherokee regardless of price or trim level starts out with a 3.6-liter 290-horsepower V6 for motivation. Two other engines are available on select trims. Rear-wheel drive is standard on many models while four-wheel drive is available on all and standard on some. Every Grand Cherokee comes with driver safety aids like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring. Jeep also offers the three-row Grand Cherokee L in all of the same trims with the same features aside from Trailhawk but as of this writing Jeep has not released details about the 2022 model year. In general, Jeep trims are highly convoluted and a bit ambiguous so settle in.
Shoppers who go for the Altitude get 20-inch wheels, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, automatic wipers, a wireless charging pad, a power liftgate, a 115-volt household style power outlet, and remote start.
The 2022 Grand Cherokee Limited comes with everything from the Altitude package except the automatic wipers and the wireless charging pad for some reason. It also gets the 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated rear seats, LED fog lights, a power-adjustable passenger seat, and terrain-based drive modes. The Limited is also the first trim where the 375-horsepower 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain becomes available. It’s a $10,000+ option that can only be found in a different section of Jeep’s website though so you might have to go searching for it. Nevertheless, it offers almost identical features as the regular trim save for things like badging.
As the most off-road focused Grand Cherokee, the Trailhawk starts with four-wheel drive and adds all-terrain tires, a limited slip rear differential, an electronically disconnectable stabilizer bar, an adaptive air suspension, front tow hooks, a front facing camera, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, hill ascent and descent control, and a nine-speaker Alpine audio system with navigation. The Trailhawk also offers buyers a 5.7-liter V8 as an optional powertrain. It makes 357-horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque.
Consider the Overland trim as the luxurious, less capable Trailhawk. It goes back to using the V6 and adds 20-inch wheels, ambient cabin lighting, an upgraded leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and a two-speed transfer case to options found on the Trailhawk or Limited trim. Those include ventilated front seats, front parking sensors, front tow hooks, hill descent control, and the adaptive air suspension.
This trim is focused on interior comfort and features a 10.1-inch infotainment system, massaging front seats, quad-zone climate control, passenger seat memory settings, a wood-trimmed steering wheel, a surround-view camera, front cross-traffic alert, active driving assist, and an automated parking system.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve has a feature list even longer than its name. It includes 21-inch wheels, a faux suede headliner, premium leather upholstery, ventilated second-row seats, open-pore wood trim, a 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, and a 10.25-inch infotainment system for the front passenger. This trim also has access to the 5.7-liter V8 for an additional $3,295. Buyers can, of course, also go for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe which bumps the price to a whopping $76,490.
Jeep offers a three-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty on every Grand Cherokee. It also includes complimentary maintenance for three-years or 36,000-miles.

Pricing feels like a bit of a pain point for the 2022 Grand Cherokee which asks buyers to pay more for the brand name and the off-road capability. If those things are paramount to your next new SUV, it’s hard to find another brand save for Land Rover that can offer the same capability. At the same time, we expect the Grand Cherokee to hold its value well so maybe the high purchase cost will be eased over time.
