For 2022, the only significant change to the Jeep Wrangler lineup is the addition of the Willys Xtreme Recon package. It gets a 1.5-inch lift, bigger brakes, and 35-inch all-terrain tires wrapped around 17-inch wheels. The Islander package from 2021 is no more.
Unquestionable capability
An engine for every enthusiast
Ultimate customizability
Poor on-road manners
Almost comically expensive
Unrefined interior
Modern safety equipment would be nice
With so many powertrain options, there’s something for everyone when it comes to the Wrangler. Frankly, none of them are poor performers either. Each one has more than ample power and none of the transmissions are disappointing either. The standard six-speed manual transmission is really enjoyable to use but the automatics are smooth too. We love the stump-pulling torque of the diesel but it’s only available with the four-door Wrangler so keep that in mind.
The turbo four-cylinder offers good power and torque too so for buyers that can’t afford the 4xe or the 392, it’s a great choice. Of course, if you can get either the 4xe or the V8, those are the most enjoyable of the bunch. The 4xe is honestly the most impressive to us since it’s so capable and well rounded. There’s no getting around one thing though, the V8 sure can put a smile on your face when you drop the hammer. All of them handle off-road driving with ease.
The only issue we have with the Wrangler is that it’s just not very good on paved roads. It’s slow to change direction, the steering feels only barely attached to the front wheels, and the way it struggles to dampen road imperfections at speed is a bit laughable for a vehicle that can easily cost $45,000 or more.
According to the EPA, no Wrangler gets more than 25 mpg combined but the 4xe does offer around 20 miles of all-electric range. The V8 unsurprisingly comes in last with just 14 mpg combined.
Some Wranglers are going to be used in deep mud, sand, dust, and dirt, and for those, this interior will be wildly easy to clean. The materials are mostly composed of harder plastics or stain-resistant upholstery. The seating is supportive too and we love how easy it is to remove pieces like the doors and the roof. The central control stack is also well-appointed, easy to use, and looks nice. Beyond those benefits, the Wrangler feels a bit cheap and underwhelming.
Of course, it’s hard to be both easy to clean, hard to break, and also highly comfortable and luxurious. We’d love to see nicer materials used for the dash, the door cards, and the seats for instance. In addition, the interior is always a bit louder than rivals in this class. The hardtop Wrangler helps out somewhat. Cargo space is very limited in the two-door model and the rear seats don’t fold flat. The four-door offers considerably more storage.
Most Jeep Wranglers will use a 7 or 8.4-inch infotainment system and both are great. Uconnect is a fast and highly-functional system too. We really love all of the cool off-road information that can be obtained through it and the optional driver information display. It’s not just the inside where the technology is at work in the Wrangler though. The use of clever tech like electronically disconnecting stabilizer bars, locking differentials, and Fox shocks make this the most capable Wrangler in history. For those that are willing to spend, driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation are both available.
The Wrangler received mostly good scores from the IIHS in their testing but failed to pick up any awards. Likewise, the NHTSA has not given the Wrangler an overall score but has awarded it four stars in most tests that have been conducted. As mentioned above, some advanced driver aids are available on the Wrangler but we’d love to see these become standard as they are in many rivals.
Jeep starts out the Wrangler with 17-inch wheels, fog lights, tow-hooks, crank windows, manual door locks, and a 7-inch infotainment system equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This trim and most others use a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 285-horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Jeep also offers a bevy of additional powertrain options including a mild-hybrid version of this engine, a similarly mild-hybrid four-cylinder, a diesel V6, and two trim specific powertrains including the 4xe plug-in hybrid and the 470-hp HEMI V8 in the Rubicon 392.
The Willys Sport gets 32-inch mud-terrain tires, a limited-slip differential, and heavy-duty shocks along with rock rails for more off-road capability. It also adds air conditioning.
The Sport S starts out with heated power-adjustable mirrors and adds the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It also has 17-inch aluminum wheels, power-windows, and automatic door locks.
The Willys builds on the Willys Sport with LED headlights and fog lights, as well as skid plates, 17-inch Moab black aluminum wheels, tinted windows, and lumbar adjustments in the driver’s seat.
The Sport Altitude is only available with four doors, also known as the Unlimited configuration. It gets 18-inch gloss black wheels, a rear-window defroster, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 3.5-inch driver information display.
The Sahara offers buyers full-time four-wheel-drive, remote keyless entry, automatic climate control, and an 8.4-inch infotainment system. It’s also only available with four doors. This is the first trim that can be ordered with the new 4xe engine. It uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain that can travel just over 20 miles on battery power alone. It also makes 375-horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque which is well above every other engine aside from the 2022 Wrangler Rubicon 392. It can also be had on the Rubicon or High Altitude trim.
Consider the Rubicon as the first super hardcore off-roader in the group as it gets heavy-duty axles, an electronically disconnecting front stabilizer bar, electronically locking differentials, rock rails, off-road drive modes, and all-terrain tires. It’s the last trim in the lineup available with two doors.
Black leather upholstery starts out the Sahara Altitude and it’s added to with features like a three-piece removable hardtop, a premium Alpine audio system, HD radio, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, a 7-inch driver information display, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
The Wrangler High Altitude is the luxury Wrangler in many ways. It gets 20-inch wheels, caramel-colored interior accents, illuminated cup holders, a 115-volt household-style power outlet, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and blind-spot monitoring. It also comes with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic as standard equipment.
There’s no replacement for displacement in the Rubicon 392. Its V8 makes 470-horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque and can sprint from 0-60 in just 4.7-seconds. It also gets bigger brakes, Fox shocks, leather upholstery, a 2-inch lift, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision mitigation.
Jeep offers a three-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty as well as a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. It also covers maintenance for the first three years of ownership.

The Jeep Wrangler doesn’t really offer a good value for those who will never go off-road. At the same time, for those that want a vehicle that they can daily drive and we mean drive to anywhere, the Wrangler doesn’t have a rival aside from the Ford Bronco.
