What’s New for the 2022 Nissan Altima?
For 2022, there are two new upgrades to the Nissan Altima. First, the SV trim with the Premium package gets heated mirrors with LED turn signals. Second, the SR trim level can be had with a Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim.

2022 Nissan Altima Powertrain
Nissan makes just enough horsepower from its 2.5-liter engine that the 2022 Nissan Altima keeps up with its rivals just fine. While this is by far the most dramatically styled vehicle in the class, it’s by no means as bombastic to drive. It’s calm and composed in city traffic and the engine is only really notable once throttle input is above 50%. From that point forward, the engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) are fairly loud compared to competitors like the Hyundai Sonata or the Honda Accord. In general, the CVT is a good unit. It’s surprisingly smooth and it’s even fast to react as though it had real gears when we used the paddle shifters to force “gear changes”.
We can’t say the same about the ride quality though. Nissan hasn’t quite caught up with the rest of the pack in this regard. Any road that’s not nearly perfect will transmit more vibration and noise into the cabin than we expected. We haven’t gotten to the sedan’s best feature though. The turbocharged engine wakes up the Altima in a big way and reminds us of older sportier Altimas. Some of the harsh handling characteristics can be overlooked when there’s a multitude of horsepower. It’s a bit annoying that the turbo option can’t be had with AWD though. Still, Cars like the Kia K5 provide a much more engaging drive.
2022 Nissan Altima Fuel Economy & MPG
Regardless of which Altima you might choose, they’re all pretty happy to sip fuel. The worst offender is a tie between the turbo engine and the all-wheel-drive 2.5-liter. They both get 29 mpg combined according to the EPA. The FWD model combined with the normal four-cylinder gets up to 32 mpg combined.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space
The inside of the 2022 Nissan Altima is a comfortable place to be. The seats offer good support, comfort, and adjustability. It’s also great to see so much tech available on lower trims, but we’ll get to that later. The downside of the Altima has to be in the way it makes you feel inside the cabin. We’ve already talked about the disappointing ride quality, but the interior itself isn’t great either. None of the materials suggest quality and frankly, the whole layout feels like the result of asking a random person ‘What does a car interior look like to you?’. It’s just a bit drab and uninspiring.
The benefit of that design is that there’s no fumbling around or wondering where certain controls are. Everything is laid out as simply as possible. There’s great cargo space both in the trunk and in the door pockets. The rear seats also fold down to provide up to 42 cubic feet of cargo area.
Entertainment & Technology
The 2022 Nissan Altima is one of the more tech-heavy options in the segment. From the base trim, all the way up the lineup Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard. Nissan’s infotainment user interface is easy to use but can be slow to respond at times. Nevertheless, it’s featureful and the tech doesn’t stop there. Satellite radio and a larger touchscreen are available from the SV trim and above. Adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, and LED headlights are too. Top trims like the SL and Platinum get a premium nine-speaker Bose audio system, traffic sign recognition, and navigation too.
Safety Features
Nissan offers a great safety suite of equipment on every 2022 Nissan Altima including automatic high beams, forward collision mitigation, and driver attention warning. The NHTSA hasn’t rated the 2022 Altima yet, but the 2021 model received a five-star crash test rating. The IIHS has awarded the 2022 Altima a Top Safety Pick+, their highest award.
2022 Nissan Altima Trims & Pricing
S – $24,550
The base Altima starts buyers out with 16-inch wheels, cloth upholstery, remote start, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a 7-inch infotainment system featuring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as six speakers. The S also comes with a slew of safety features including automatic emergency braking, a rear seat reminder, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning. Buyers can add a driver assist package that includes a power-adjustable passenger seat, rear parking sensors, rear automatic braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Every Altima, save for the SR-Turbo, comes with a 188-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a CVT and front-wheel drive. This base trim and the above-mentioned SR-Turbo are the only two models that cannot be optioned with all-wheel drive.
SV – $25,550
Nissan starts the Altima SV out with larger 17-inch wheels, a larger 8-inch infotainment system, and LED headlights. They also include everything from the driver assist package and then tack on two Nissan only technologies called Intelligent Ride Control and Intelligent Trace Control that serve to improve handling and ride comfort. An optional premium package adds heated front seats, a sunroof, as well as heated mirrors. It also includes Nissan’s ProPILOT assist system featuring adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.
SR – $26,550
If you’re looking for a little more athleticism consider the Altima SR as it gets a unique sport suspension, transmission paddle shifters, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 19-inch wheels. It also gets most of the Premium Package from the SV save for the ProPILOT goodies. Buyers looking at the SR can opt for the much more powerful SR VC-Turbo though which comes with a 2.0-liter 236-horsepower four-cylinder engine.
SL – $29,990
The SL also starts out with the Premium Package from the SV but adds on leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, fog lights, and an updated infotainment system with nine speakers and navigation. Buyers also get a cool remote start intelligent climate control feature which can warm or cool the car depending on the outside temperature before they get in.
Platinum – $34,250
The Nissan Altima Platinum is the only one in the family that comes with all-wheel-drive as standard. It also gets a slick 360-degree camera system, ambient interior lighting, driver’s seat memory settings, and unique 19-inch wheels.
Warranties
Nissan offers what is basically the industry standard base warranty. It covers the powertrain for five years or 60,000 miles and includes Limited warranty coverage of three years or 36,000 miles.

The 2022 Nissan Altima isn’t the most innovative car in the segment, but it’s also a great value in almost every trim. The optional all-wheel-drive adds capability and its simple straightforward interior makes it a comfortable choice for most drivers.
