2022 RAM 1500 Powertrain

2022 Ram 1500 3.0L V6 - media.stellantisnorthamerica.com

Throughout the 2022 RAM 1500 lineup, there’s not a bad engine choice. If anything, the two V6 models leave just a bit of power to be desired. Still, the 3.6L V6 gas-burner has 305 horsepower and the 3.0L V6 turbo diesel features 480 lb-ft of torque, so really there’s enough power for any practical use.

The RAM 1500’s 5.7L HEMI V8s that make 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque only make things better. Of course, it would be nice if buyers didn’t have to spend nearly $60,000 before a V8 was standard equipment under the hood of the RAM. If you’re going to spend that much on this truck, we’d recommend going for the incredible and otherworldly RAM TRX with its supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 that makes 702 horsepower. It’s not economical at all, but it’s so much fun most won’t care.

Then there’s the RAM 1500’s handling. In a word, it’s flawless. It’s so much better than every other truck on the market right now and truthfully, it’s not very close. The steering is sharper and the brakes react beautifully too. The advanced suspension makes the RAM 1500 feel much smaller than it actually is. Independent suspension has done wonders for this RAM and it makes every drive more enjoyable.

Towing & Payload

2022 Ram 1500 - media.stellantisnorthamerica.com
2022 Ram 1500 - media.stellantisnorthamerica.com

The 2022 RAM 1500 can tow up to 12,750 pounds when properly equipped. That’s a massive number, but in class, it’s actually only better than the new Toyota Tundra. Both the Ford F-150 (14,000 pounds) and the Chevrolet Silverado (13,300 pounds) can tow more. Realistically though, they’re close enough that the difference won’t be a factor for most buyers.

2022 RAM 1500 Fuel Economy & MPG

When it comes to fuel economy, the 2022 RAM 1500 is all over the board. The RAM TRX is rated at just 10 mpg city and 14 mpg highway. The RAM 1500 HFE diesel is on the other side of that board with 23 city mpg and 33 on the highway. Then, a mid-trim V8-equipped RAM with 4WD will get up to 19 mpg combined.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The 2022 RAM 1500 is supremely impressive inside, so long as you’re in one of the top four trims. Below Rebel, the RAM 1500 is still a nice truck, but it does lack a wow factor. At the Rebel level and above though, it’s special in its space. It features luxurious features like heated and ventilated seats that feel fantastic, real wood accents, and supple leather upholstery. The layout feels like a next-gen workspace. It’s capable of being much more than just a straightforward pickup truck that your grandpa might have piloted. This RAM can be everything you need, a work vehicle, an office, and a family hauler.

There’s more than enough space in both the front and the rear. The crew cab is only available on the bottom three trims and while it’s not really made for transporting four adults on long trips, it still manages shorter trips easily. The climate control reacts quickly and accurately and we love how much storage is found in the RAM 1500. The center storage area for instance is so cavernous that you might lose stuff in there for weeks.

Entertainment & Technology

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Uconnect is a great system. In the 2022 RAM 1500, it’s only beset by the weird way RAM has decided which trims get which system. Tradesman, HFE, and Big Horn buyers will be stuck with a tiny 5-inch system that’s outdated in every way. Laramie through Limited Longhorn buyers will get a larger 8.4-inch system that should be standard in the first three models in our opinion.

Then there’s the big screen from the Limited model which really should be standard in the Laramie and above. Shifting the trims that way would allow RAM to focus more on the larger screens and get them performing better. Unlike in other vehicles we’ve reviewed, the larger screens in the RAM can be laggy at times. Beyond the slow response, we still love the layout, the big clear buttons, and the addition of physical controls for vital systems like climate control.

Safety Features

It’s notable that the RAM 1500 won a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS in 2021. The NHTSA has yet to test this truck as of yet. No active advanced safety equipment comes on the 2022 RAM 1500 unless buyers opt for it. Of course, the Level 1 package of additional safety features is only $595. Other options like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are also available.

Rebel – $47,850

The Rebel is a true rough and tumble truck. It comes from the factory with more ride height than other RAMs in addition to performance shocks, 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, LED fog lights headlight and taillights, a sport performance hood, and a locking tailgate. Inside, it gets a power-adjustable driver’s seat but the passenger seat reverts to manual controls. It also reverts to the 5-inch infotainment system with the option to upgrade.

2022 Ram 1500 Limited Longhorn - media.stellantisnorthamerica.com

Limited Longhorn – $54,430

18-inch wheels, heated power-folding mirrors, and bi-function LED headlights start off the upgrades featured on the Limited Longhorn over trims below it. It also gets dual-exhaust, a heated steering wheel, an 8.4-inch infotainment system, 1-touch power windows, and a 7-inch driver information display. Safety features like forward-collision warning and parking sensors become standard.

2022 Ram 1500 TRX - media.stellantisnorthamerica.com
2022 Ram 1500 TRX - media.stellantisnorthamerica.com

TRX – $72,490

At the top of the pickup truck food chain is the RAM 1500 TRX. It comes with a 702 horsepower supercharged V8. As we’ve noted in a previous review, it’s absolutely beastly. It does revert some options found on the Limited. For instance, the driver’s seat is the only power-adjustable chair in the truck. No heating or ventilation either. Of course, it does still get the large 12-inch touchscreen and the 7-inch driver information display.

Warranties

RAM offers a basic 3-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty and a 5-year or 50,000-mile powertrain warranty on all brand new 2022 RAM 1500 models. They also don’t offer any complimentary maintenance like Toyota does.

The 2022 RAM 1500 is a truck after people who care about substance over tradition. It proudly bucks convention and is better for it. Yeah, Ford sells more and other rivals offer less expensive options, but the RAM 1500 is still the best truck on the market thanks to its ride, its power, and its comfort.
