Introduced in 2020, this generation gets small updates for the 2022 model year. Among them are new standard 17-inch alloy wheels for the base model as well as rear climate vents for the Premium. Sport models also get those vents but also add rear automatic braking, a sunroof, and blind-spot monitoring.
Excellent AWD system
Comfortable ride
Great visibility
Disappointing transmission
Limited turbo availability
Hit or miss infotainment
We’d love a real performance transmission
The 2022 Subaru Legacy is available with two different engines. The base is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 182-horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. It’s linked to a continuously variable transmission and all-wheel-drive. We’ve heard a lot of complaints about this base powertrain but in our experience it’s the transmission, not the engine itself that let us down. We’d love more power but we think it would be enough if not for inconsistent behavior from the transmission.
The more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged engine available on the top two trim levels produces 260-horsepower and 277lb-ft of torque. It is strong enough to mostly overcome the transmission woes. The excellent all-wheel-drive system makes the Legacy more engaging when the road gets twisty. Still, we’d love to see Subaru return to some of its performance-focused roots by giving us a car with real gears.
The base engine in the Legacy gets an EPA estimated 27 MPG in the city and 35 on the highway. That’s not bad when considered against its rivals but still falls short of the best in the class. The turbocharged Legacy drops to 24 MPG in the city and 32 on the highway.
Subaru has really matured its design over the years. It looks more expensive than it actually is and the fit and finish of the cabin is impressive. We also really enjoy the supportive, highly-adjustable, and comfortable seating throughout the cabin. Side bolsters on the front seats are especially excellent in the corners and an adjustable thigh bolster is a great bonus.
Climate controls can take a little getting used to but once they’re mastered they work well. The optional heated and ventilated seats also do an excellent job of reacting quickly and effectively. Additionally, visibility is well above average for the segment. Overall, the cabin is quiet and soaks up imperfections in the road easily. Cargo space is another solid feature for the Legacy as the trunk holds 15 cubic feet worth of gear. If you need even more you might consider the Subaru Crosstrek.
In terms of size we don’t think any customers will complain about the infotainment system in the Legacy. Even the base model has an interesting dual 7-inch system and everything above it uses an 11.6-inch vertically oriented screen with smartphone-like controls. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both standard. In practice, we’d love to see the system work a little faster and with a little less complexity. At the same time, much like the climate controls, once figured out, there’s some powerful functionality. For example, it’s great that you can use the screen to do two things at once. Gone are the days of losing your navigation pane if you want to change the media for instance.
The NHTSA has given the 2022 Subaru Legacy five stars after completing its crash test evaluations. In addition, we love the inclusion of Subaru’s EyeSight software. While it’s not as adept at completing subtle inputs we’re happy that it’s onboard and expect it to add value.
The base Legacy starts out with 17-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, dual 7-inch infotainment displays, Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay connectivity, four speakers, two USB ports, and satellite radio. In addition, every Legacy comes with Subaru’s EyeSight suite of driver safety aids. It includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam control.
An 11.6-inch vertically-oriented infotainment system is the most noticeable upgrade to the Premium trim. It’s joined by a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated side mirrors, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, six speakers, and a total of four USB ports.
The Sport adds unique 18-inch wheels, red accent stitching, LED fog lights, blind-spot monitoring, a sunroof, navigation, and reverse automatic braking.
The Limited trim gets its own set of 18-inch wheels, a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated rear seats, leather upholstery, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
At the Limited XT level you’ll get the punchier turbocharged engine along with a sunroof, a heated steering wheel, and a driver attention alert system.
Buyers of the Legacy Touring XT won’t miss a single thing as it comes with every available option including faux leather trim accents, power-folding side mirrors, ventilated front seats, upgraded leather upholstery, and a front-view camera.
Every Legacy comes with a three-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. No complimentary maintenance is offered and so, as a package, Subaru is doing the bare minimum here. Rivals from Hyundai and Kia, for instance, offer more warranty coverage and the former includes complimentary maintenance as well.

The Legacy feels like a car that’s quite content as a matured sedan that’s eyeing retirement. That’s not all bad of course. It’s comfortable, easy to drive, and spacious inside. At the same time, it doesn’t offer the sharpness that some rivals do. It also fails to compete with regard to warranty coverage, fuel economy, and styling. If you’re in the market for a Subaru sedan it’s worth a look but don’t forget to cross shop it with others like the Hyundai Sonata.
