2022 Toyota GR Supra Review

Fast looking and fast in practice, the new 2022 Toyota GR Supra is coming for the rest of its rivals for thousands less.

What’s New for the 2022 Toyota GR Supra

When the latest generation of the Toyota Supra arrived the reception was to say the very least, lukewarm. Now, just a few years later, the picture is becoming more clear even if the styling is still a love it or hate it proposition.

For just a shade over $50,000, the GR Supra 3.0 is one of the most competitive sports cars in the segment. Add to that the 2.0 model which isn’t as fast but is still just as well built and still abscinds opinions just the same. At the end of the day, this sports car offers a package that’s attractive even for buyers that might not have their eye caught by the Supra at first glance.

The biggest addition to the 2022 Toyota GR Supra is the new top-of-the-line A91-CF trim which takes the A91 trim level from last year and adds in carbon fiber bits as well as special wheels and paint colors. No updates happen for the 2.0 Supra, but the 3.0 Premium gets new ruby interior trim and all 3.0 models get heated seats standard.

2022 Toyota GR Supra Powertrain

It’s easy to focus on the bigger of the two Toyota Supra engines and we’ll get to it, but let’s first talk about how good the smaller motor really is. 255 horsepower sounds paltry considering the wild horsepower wars raging right now or even the fact that the GR86 makes nearly as much. Still, don’t overlook the 295 lb-ft of torque which puts this powertrain on a different level. Acceleration is linear in a way that most turbocharged 4-cylinder engines can’t even dream of. In addition, the lower weight of the smaller engine makes the Supra 2.0 just that much more chuckable when you throw a hard corner at it.

What the Toyota Supra’s 3.0-liter engine does so much better is add layers of usable performance. Yes, it carries more speed through long straights, but it also carries more through a turn and exits that turn quicker. While the 2.0 might feel a bit purer as a bare-bones sports car, the 3.0 feels like a proper successor to the DNA that made up the last Supra. The ZF-sourced transmission is honestly amazing and feels so close to a dual-clutch that most won’t know the difference.

2022 Toyota GR Supra Fuel Economy & MPG

Don’t expect any changes over the previous year’s scores. With respect to the smaller engine, the Supra achieved an EPA rating of 28 mpg combined while the larger scored 25 mpg combined. In this space with the capabilities that the Toyota Supra has, that’s outstanding.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

One more major successes of the Toyota Supra is just how nice it is to be inside this car. No, it’s not particularly accommodating to taller drivers like myself, but even I could find a way to get comfortable after some adjustments. Once settled in it’s easy to appreciate one massive benefit of the partnership with BMW. Everything in here makes this the nicest Toyota on sale today and that includes the six-figure Land Cruiser. The materials are all of high quality and feature exceptionally tight panel gaps. Outward visibility is solid though the pillars can pose a bit of an obstacle from time to time.

Cargo space is limited throughout the Toyota Supra. Inside there are a few cubbies and storage spaces but nothing cavernous. There isn’t even a center storage area that most rivals possess. In the trunk, there’s enough space to fit a few smaller bags, but passengers might feel hard-pressed to stow enough supplies for more than a weekend away.

2022 Toyota GR Supra Entertainment & Technology

Both the driver information display and the 8.8-inch infotainment screen are bright and easy to read. For those familiar with Toyota products, the Supra will rightly feel quite foreign as it’s largely based on the iDrive system found in the Z4. Despite that, we think most drivers will sort it out quickly and appreciate its rich depth and flexibility. All three sound systems are good, but we’d stick with the middle-of-the-range 10-speaker unit as it seems to be the sweet spot when it comes to value for the dollar.

Safety Features

While many are asking Toyota for a manual transmission in the Supra, the fact that all of them are currently automatic means that they all get a full suite of advanced safety features like automated emergency braking and lane-departure warning. In addition, drivers can opt for adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring as well.

2.0 – $44,215

The base Toyota Supra comes with a very punchy 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to the same eight-speed automatic that the 3.0-liter engine uses and both feed power to the rear wheels only. This iteration of the Supra also gets 18-inch wheels, four speakers mated to an 8.8-inch infotainment system, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, and manually adjustable seats. All Supras will be equipped with cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assist.

3.0 – $52,565

Buyers who bump up to the big engine will get some performance goodies to help with that extra power in the form of Brembo four-piston front brakes, adaptive dampers, a front strut-tower brace, and power-adjustable seats. New for 2022, each 3.0 will come with heated seats as standard.

2022 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 Premium - pressroom.toyota.com

3.0 Premium – $55,715

The Premium might be the sweet spot in the lineup as it adds luxurious features like a 12-speaker JBL sound system, a touchscreen version of the 8.8-inch infotainment system, wireless device charging, and a heads-up display. It also gets larger rear brakes and full leather upholstery.

3.0 A91-CF – $64,305

Last year the A91 edition arrived with some carbon accents, but the CF in this year’s model stands specifically for Carbon Fiber and as such, each of the 600 cars in total that will be built to this specification will get carbon fiber canards, side rockers, a front splitter, and rear spoiler. In addition, it will only come in three colors, white, yellow, and gray and each will get special 19-inch wheels.

Warranties

Toyota offers 3 years or 36,000 miles of limited warranty coverage on the Toyota Supra as well as 5 years or 60,000 miles of powertrain coverage. They also provide 2 years or 25,000 miles of complimentary maintenance.
