The Toyota Tacoma has long been one of the most capable, comfortable, and reliable pickups on the market and it should have no problem continuing that dominance for 2022. It’s also one of the most versatile mid-sized pickup trucks with eight different trims available and outstanding configurability. Let’s take a deep dive into one of the most attractive trucks on the market today that’s just gotten even better.
For 2022, Toyota has made some small adjustments for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma that should add to its allure. New paint colors are available on specific trims and a set of special 16-inch bronze wheels are available on the Trail Edition, but it’s not all aesthetic changes for the Taco. Both the TRD Pro and the Trail Edition get a slightly taller suspension to aid in every off-road situation.
More capable than ever
Great aggressive styling
Outstanding safety tech
Drowsy base engine
Small interior
Tall step-up height
The overall straight-line performance won’t set anybody’s pants on fire regardless of the drivetrain, but both of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma’s options are sincerely good. The base 2.7-liter 4-cylinder is punchy, has reasonable torque, and can get the job done when needed. Still, we prefer the V6 as it nearly doubles the power output. Both engines can be had with a traditional six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. The auto is sometimes a bit slow to react and can sometimes seem a bit confused as to which gear it wants to use. For us, that means that the manual is the way to go and not just because it’s one of the few vehicles still available with three pedals. This six-speed happens to be very good. It’s easy to find gears, super smooth and provides excellent feedback.
The EPA has rated the Toyota Tacoma at 18 mpg combined when equipped with 4WD and the V6, but ratings only get better from there. The rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder Tacoma gets 21 mpg combined. That might be a bit lower than some other options, but it’s good enough to get by.
The inside of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma is decidedly uncomplicated. Unless in the Limited or TRD Pro model, there’s not much at all in the way of luxury. Nevertheless, it’s amicable and comfortable. The layout is incredibly familiar and easy to use. The seats are super-adjustable, supportive, and firm in all the right ways. Visibility is great in every direction. We feel the rear seats are a bit restrictive regardless of the model, so maybe don’t take long road trips in the Tacoma with full-sized adults in the back. One thing most drivers won’t have to worry about is road noise as this Toyota is noticeably quieter than many rivals. Bed space is good and some trims feature locking storage bins back there.
Toyota leads many competitors in terms of standard tech. Every 2022 Toyota Tacoma gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. They also all get the smallest infotainment screen available among its peers coming in at 7 inches. The user interface is a little better than middle-of-the-road, but the graphics are outstanding. The optional navigation system is also very good. Adding to the utility of the truck you’ll find USB ports all over the place and in some trims a 120-volt outlet in the bed for on the job-site work.
We also love all the standard advanced safety features on the new 2022 Toyota Tacoma. Adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assist are all included. For those that go off-road, the Multi-Terrain camera system provides an extra layer of safety there.
Despite being the base model, the SR is a very well-equipped truck. Every 2022 Toyota Tacoma comes with Toyota SafetySense which features adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and forward collision mitigation. In terms of features, the SR starts out with six speakers, a 7-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable heated mirrors, a WiFi hotspot, a sliding rear window, and 16-inch wheels.
Buyers of the SR5 trim level get the larger 8-inch infotainment system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and chrome exterior trim. Those who opt for the V6 at the SR5 trim level will get a power-adjustable driver’s seat, auto-dimming mirror, and allow wheels.
For those weekend trail warriors on a budget, the TRD Sport offers 17-inch wheels, a hood scoop, a wireless charging pad, keyless entry, and a sport-tuned suspension. It’s also standardly equipped with the V6, so all of the V6 only options from the SR5 are also here.
The Trail Edition is also closely related to the SR5, but it only comes as a V6 double-cab with the V6 engine, all-terrain tires, locking storage in the bed, special seats, and a 120-volt outlet in the bed.
The TRD Off-Road starts out with an advanced off-road traction control system, a locking rear differential, Bilstein shocks, and 16-inch wheels. It also loses the hood scoop and the front air dam to improve off-roading ability.
Buyers in search of a 2022 Toyota Tacoma that can shuttle clients around in comfort will want to look at the Limited model which is by far the most luxurious. It’s got 18-inch wheels, a premium JBL audio system, leather upholstery, a sunroof, parking sensors in the rear, navigation, LED headlights, a 360-degree camera system, and blind-spot monitoring.
Similarly equipped as the Limited, the Nightshade package adds black styling cues all over the place including smoke-colored wheels, door handles, mirror caps, and grids.
The TRD Pro takes off-roading seriously with Fox internal bypass shocks, special 16-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, LED headlights, a special off-road camera system called Multi-Terrain monitor, and a thicker front skid plate.
