What’s new for the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe?

Chevrolet hasn’t made many changes to the Tahoe lineup for 2023 but there are a couple of very important ones. First, Super Cruise, the brand’s autonomous driving technology is now available on the top trims.

In addition, the RST trim gets an available Performance package, first shown off at the Detroit Auto Show, with serious upgrades including more power, better braking, and a more agile chassis. Additionally, new paint colors and a new black grille with blacked-out trim are available.

2023 Chevrolet Tahoe Powertrain

Chevrolet offers three distinct powertrains starting with a base 5.3-liter V8 that makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. It’s standard across all but the top trim and it’s more than adequate. We like how it delivers power and doesn’t seem to have any noticeable struggle. The 6.2-liter V8 packs 420 hp, 460 lb-ft of toque, and it’s a hoot.

We drove the larger Suburban with this engine and it was good in that platform but in the Tahoe, it’s even better. Less weight plays a big role there and allows the charismatic personality of the engine to come out. Mash the gas pedal down and it’ll spin the back tires with ease. What’s just as important is that the suspension and communicative feedback from the chassis make it easy to control. It’s one of the things that helped it win our comparison test against the Toyota Sequoia.

Finally, there’s a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo diesel that develops 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Not only is it an overtaking powerhouse on the highway but it’s more fuel efficient than the other two engines. It does lack the low-speed snap of the gas burners but it’s better for towing. All three engines use the same 10-speed automatic transmission that we’ve been a fan of for years. It’s smooth and quiet.

Towing & Payload

When properly equipped the Tahoe can tow up to 8,400 pounds with the help of the 5.3L V8, RWD drivetrain, and the Max Trailering package. Even in its weakest form the Tahoe can tow 7,700 pounds. That’s above average for the segment.

2023 Chevrolet Tahoe Fuel Economy & MPG

The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe has three available engines depending on the trim level you select. Tahoe’s equipped with the 5.3 liter engine will get 15 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway. Adding 4WD will drop those numbers to 14 mpg city and 20 on the highway according to the EPA.

Models with the bigger 6.2-liter engine get 14 mpg city but manages to tie the smaller motor with 20 mpg on the highway. Highway mileage drops to 18 mpg with the 4wd powertrain.

Chevrolet Tahoes with the 3.0 diesel engine is the most efficient with up to 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Mileage drops to 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

Where the Tahoe really excels is in how spacious the cabin is. All three rows offer good headroom, and the front two rows offer ample legroom too. The front seats are especially good thanks to their cushioning and bolstering. The driving position is great for visibility in most cases but the tall nose of the Tahoe can make placing it more difficult. The second-row seats are available with heating and a polished rear-seat entertainment system. At the same time, we’d love to see more polish on the rest of the interior.

Cheaper feeling and looking plastics span the cabin and can feel underwhelming in a vehicle that can cost $70,000 or more. Where those cheaper materials are good is in the back when one wants to use the Tahoe for hauling cargo. Behind the third row are 25.5 cubic feet of storage space. Drop the back seats though and that expands to 122.9 cubic feet which is downright cavernous.

Entertainment & Technology

Tahoe buyers won’t be in need of more technology because Chevy packs this SUV with some great features. An 8-inch infotainment system is standard on the base LS model but above that, every Tahoe gets a 10.2-inch screen with integrated navigation. It also gets wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with a Wi-Fi hotspot and a trio of USB power ports. Buyers can also spec the Tahoe with Bose premium sound systems, a 12-inch Driver Information Center, as well as a rear-seat entertainment system that includes a pair of 12.6-inch displays for the second-row passengers. In our experience, the entire technology suite is fast, easy to use, and unfussy.

Safety Features

Every Tahoe comes with lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, forward collision warning, and automated emergency braking. High Country and Premier trims offer advanced driver assist Chevrolet Super Cruise technology. Other brands like Hyundai offer more equipment at a lower price. On top of that, the Tahoe received only a four-star crash test rating from the NHTSA and received no awards from the IIHS.

High Country – $76,195

The 6.2-liter V8 finally becomes standard at this level. 22-inch wheels, heated and ventilated front seats, a rear camera mirror, a 15-inch diagonal heads-up display, a 360-degree camera system, and rear pedestrian alert all become standard features.

Warranties

Chevrolet offers one of the most basic warranties on the Tahoe. It includes five years or 60,000 miles of powertrain coverage and three years or 36,000 miles of limited coverage. Buyers get one free maintenance visit. That’s just about the very shortest warranty package available in this segment. Jeep for example covers the Wagoneer for the same time periods but includes three years of complimentary maintenance.

What we think

2023 Chevrolet Tahoe - chevrolet.com

2023 Chevrolet Tahoe – chevrolet.com |  Shop 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe on Carsforsale.com

Those planning to spend somewhere in the $50k-$60k range should consider new car incentives and look hard at the Tahoe LT. The higher-priced trims get harder to justify as their interiors aren’t as nice as some other rival SUVs at a similar price point. It lacks some of the technology, warranty coverage, and quality that can be found elsewhere. What the Tahoe does offer, at any price point, is a good balance of power, agility, interior space, and comfort.
