The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer gets a new Carbide package that blacks out the badging and wheels but the real news is the addition of a new inline-six engine to the whole Wagoneer lineup. Not only is it more powerful than the V8 but it’s also more fuel efficient too.
Spacious interior
Comfortable ride
Great technology
Quite pricey
Not nimble
Drinks gas like it’s going out of style
The nicest Jeep model at a price
Jeep still offers the same V8 that it did on the 2022 Wagoneer but for 2023, it’s only available on the base model. It still develops 392 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque. That’s not bad at all and we found that the Wagoneer felt more fleet of foot than its gargantuan proportions might suggest. Nevertheless, we still prefer the new 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine dubbed Hurricane. It develops 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque.
Not only do buyers get to enjoy that additional horsepower but they’ll get better fuel economy at the same time. It’s worth noting that no Wagoneer is particularly agile, quick in a straight line, yes, but happy to make harder turns at speed, no.
We doubt many buyers will be interested in its lap time capabilities. What it’s best at is soaking up highway miles at speed and for that, it’s quite good. What makes it stand out is that when needed, this huge SUV can actually go off-road without struggling like the vast majority of its competitors would.
Across the Wagoneer lineup, each model can tow up to 10,000 pounds when properly equipped. For the class, that’s quite strong and beats out past Jeep products by a large margin too.
Vehicles this large tend to have at least one big disadvantage and that’s fuel economy. Sadly, the Jeep Wagoneer doesn’t balk this trend. The V8 gets an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway. Keep in mind too that you’ll need mid-grade gasoline to pull that off. In addition, the Hurricane inline-six gets up to 17 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway on regular gas.
Evidently, a 4xe version with plug-in hybrid tech is on the horizon at some point. Hybridization will help boost fuel economy, but details on this new 4xe Grand Cherokee are light.
Comfort is the name of the game inside the cabin of the Wagoneer. To accomplish that goal, it’s quite spacious first and foremost. Of course, those who want even more space for their three-row SUV can look to the Wagoneer L (reviewed separately). For those that don’t need extra space, the normal Wagoneer is fully equipped with leather seating trim, power-adjustable seats in both front rows, and power ports everywhere.
The dash and door panels are dramatically better than pseudo-premium offerings from Jeep in years past. The materials feel good to the touch and the panel gaps are tight and uniform. We also like the addition of available remote power-folding third-row seats for when it’s time to haul extra cargo. Regardless of which seats are occupied, we like the ride quality in the Wagoneer too. It’s smooth and especially quiet with the optional active noise cancellation.
Cargo space is great too. Behind the third row is 27.4 cubic feet of storage and with those seats flat, it expands to 116.7 cubic feet. That’s like having a family hauler and a pickup with a bed topper in one car.
Sure, the Wagoneer is spacious and feels great to sit in but what makes it seriously impressive is that on top of those qualities, it’s a technology powerhouse. The 10.1-inch infotainment screen in the center console is great. We’ve always liked Uconnect software and the fifth version found in the Jeep Wagoneer is better than ever before. A 10.3-inch driver information display only adds to the fun and those who want it can add a heads-up display too.
In addition, Jeep will add a front-passenger infotainment display to any Wagoneer for under $2,000 and frankly, we can’t see a reason not to have it. It allows that passenger to help by adding navigation points, selecting media, and more.
A rear-seat infotainment system is also available and adds a pair of screens placed directly behind the front seat headrests. Amazon Fire TV is even available. We can’t think of a more well-rounded tech package at this kind of price. It certainly makes the original Wagoneer look even more archaic.
Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has released any data on the Wagoneer regarding its safety. Still, we can tell you that it comes with a decent safety suite package that includes forward collision mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. Those who want features like adaptive cruise control, lane-following technology, and more can get them but they’ll have to pay extra depending on the trim level.
The base Wagoneer comes nicely equipped with the 5.7-liter V8, LED fog lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, a tow hitch, keyless entry, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, power-adjustable second-row seats, driver’s memory settings, tri-zone climate control, a hands-free liftgate, and heated side mirrors.
Technology includes a 10.1-inch infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, four USB power points, a 115-volt household-style power outlet, integrated navigation, and nine speakers. Safety equipment includes forward collision mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors. RWD is standard on all Wagoneer models but 4WD is available. Those who go for the 4WD will also get an electronically disconnectable front axle.
The Series II starts out with 20-inch wheels and the 3.0-liter Hurricane twin-turbo engine. It also gets Nappa leather-trimmed seats, remote-folding third-row seats, a wireless charging pad, automatic wipers, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, active cabin noise cancellation, steering wheel memory settings, and LED ambient interior lighting. A Carbide package equips the Wagoneer Series II with black badging and wheels.
The top-end normal Wagoneer gets heated second-row seats, a heads-up display, automatic high beams, a 19-speaker sound system, and a bunch of available options for those that want to spend even more. Notably, desirable features like the passenger infotainment display, 360-degree camera system, adjustable roof rail cross bars, and rear-seat entertainment system all require packages that cost thousands more on top of the base price of a Series III.
The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer comes with three years or 36,000 miles of limited warranty coverage and complimentary maintenance. In addition, the powertrain itself is covered for five years or 60,000 miles. That’s a solid package in this segment and beats everything from GMC, Chevrolet, and Ford. The Lincoln Navigator offers more but starts at $81,405.

The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer is an expensive vehicle. It’s even more posh Grand Wagoneer sibling takes that to the next level and yet both are uniquely qualified for their price tag.
The Wagoneer offers sincere luxury, objective off-road capability, on-road manners, and a spacious interior in a single package. But all that comes with a hefty price tag. We are not saying that it’s a screaming good deal by any means, but the right combination of new car incentives could help make it so.
