Previewed earlier this year, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is an all-new full-size SUV from the Japanese automaker. It brings the electrified future to fruition with two powertrain setups, both of which blend hybrid systems. One is a turbocharged inline-6 making as much as 340 horsepower and the other is a plug-in hybrid offering 26 miles of electric-only range. And how about that design?! The CX-90 is clearly a hard push into the premium segment with rear-wheel-drive proportions, a longitudinally-mounted engine, and a very upscale cabin. Here’s to hoping all future Mazdas follow suit.
Long hooded lines
Powerful engines
Impressive fuel economy
So. Many. Models
Relatively light on cargo space
Tricky infotainment interface
A luxury SUV for less
In Turbo configuration, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 comes with a turbocharged 3.3L inline-6 producing 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Like every CX-90, an 8-speed automatic transmission routes power to all four wheels as part of the rear-biased AWD system. Stepping up to a Turbo S model yields the same powertrain but with the wick turned up to 340 horses and 369 torques on 91-octane. Using regular gas brings horsepower down to 319.
On that note, both of these models are rated for 25 mpg combined and 28 mpg on the highway. The entry-level CX-90’s 24 mpg city rating bests the S variant by one. Both inline-6 powertrains also blend in a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to increase efficiency, but for a more potent hybrid option, look to the CX-90 PHEV.
You can learn about the differences between electrified powertrains here, but the CX-90 PHEV makes a case for buying a plug-in hybrid by delivering 26 miles of electric-only driving range. Blending a 2.5L inline-4 and battery-powered electric motor, the PHEV models make 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque on premium or a bit less on regular gas. These CX-90s are also rated for 25 mpg combined.
For those looking to haul trailers, the inline-6 CX-90, in either setup, can pull 5,000 pounds when in Mi-Drive Tow mode and with the optional tow package. The PHEV models are rated for 3,500 pounds, but both versions benefit from poised handling that is a boon to pulling a trailer.
Mazda has really stepped up its game on cabin design with the new CX-90. Certainly, the top-spec Turbo S model is the most extravagant with quilted Nappa leather upholstery, a fabric-wrapped dashboard with unique Kakenui stitching, and faux suede door panel inserts. But even base models look upscale with flowing lines throughout. The CX-90 can seat up to eight passengers or seven when fitted with second-row captain’s chairs. Top models offer a 6-passenger configuration that swaps the 3-position third row for a more contoured design that can seat two.
Comfort is ensured by standard triple-zone automatic climate control (TZACC) and options like climatized first- and second-row cushions, a panoramic moonroof, and backseat sunshades. Cargo space tops out at 74.2 cubic feet with the back two rows folded, there are 40 cubes of space available behind the second row and 14.9 in the way back with all rows upright. That latter figure is usable, but a bit smaller than the 18 cubic feet offered by a Hyundai Palisade. Fortunately, an underfloor storage area in the cargo bay offers additional space.
Mazda fits either a 10- or 12-inch central infotainment screen to the 2024 CX-90 with a slim shape that blends nicely into the dash. Apple and Android smartphone mirroring is standard and must be in use to enable touch control of the screen. Otherwise, a rotary knob on the console must be used, which may take some getting used to. As you move up the trim ladder, features like a fully-digital gauge cluster, Bose 12-speaker audio system, head-up display (HUD), and facial-recognition system for loading driver settings become available.
i-Activsense, Mazda’s suite of advanced safety nets, includes forward collision mitigation, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a lane-keeping system, and adaptive cruise control (ACC), and is standard across the CX-90 lineup. Other standard systems like automatic high beams and a safe exit alert are on hand, while a surround-view monitor (SVM), and blind-spot assistance require moving up to at least a Turbo Premium Plus. Neither the NHTSA nor IIHS have yet tested the 2024 CX-90.
The entry-level CX-90 comes with 19-inch wheels and full LED lighting. Cabin highlights include TZACC, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a 10-inch central display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Turbo Preferred trim adds a moonroof, additional paint colors, and leather in your choice of greige or black. These trims also have heated front seats and USB ports for the third row.
Wireless smartphone mirroring and a wireless phone charging pad are included on the CX-90 Turbo Preferred Plus along with a HUD that displays traffic sign information.
Base PHEV models largely mirror the base CX-90 Turbo with rain-sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, and leather on the steering wheel and shift knob, but these models are upgraded with a fully-digital 12-inch gauge cluster.
Next up on the Turbo hierarchy is the Premium model with a hands-free liftgate, 21-inch wheels, and a panoramic moonroof. These variants also boast a 12-speaker stereo from Bose and ACC with Auto Speed Limit Assist.
Featuring a similar level of content to the Turbo Premium, these higher-performing Turbo S trims bring adaptive headlights, special exterior badging, and a 12-inch central display.
In PHEV Premium trim, the CX-90 has bright exterior accents, access to the handsome Artisan Red paint job, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, and SiriusXM satellite radio.
Atop the Turbo offerings, Premium Plus models sport 21-inch wheels, a broad array of ambient cabin lighting, lovely Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and heated rear outboard seats.
At this level, the CX-90 features the Driver Personalization System that utilizes facial recognition software to load driver settings. Other amenities include a power-adjustable steering column, a heated steering wheel, and color-matched door panels.
The highest-spec CX-90 PHEV has dual 12-inch displays – one for the gauge cluster and one for infotainment – along with an SVM and automatic reverse braking.
Cracking 60 grand, these top CX-90s come with a two-tone leather-wrapped steering wheel, quilted tan or white Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated second-row seats, and elegant faux suede door panel inserts.
Of the many 2024 Mazda CX-90 models to choose from, the 3.3 Turbo S offers the best value. It has the more potent powertrain, the biggest cabin screens, and sought-after features like adaptive headlights, a Bose audio system, and wireless smartphone mirroring. At $53,000, it competes with a top-spec Hyundai Palisade on price, but the Mazda makes quite a bit more power and is more fuel efficient. However, Mazda’s warranty is less impressive with a 3-year/36,00-mile basic term and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain term. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 scores a commendable 9.25 out of 10 by delivering impressive powertrain options, luxury style, and strong fuel economy. It would be nice if the infotainment system was touch- or button-controlled, not both, but that would likely become a non-event over time. On the whole, you can’t go wrong with a new CX-90, but the Turbo S models will deliver all the content plus a more exciting driving experience.
