The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse is all-new from the ground up. This three-row crossover marks the start of third-generation Traverse production with truck-ier styling, a new Z71 off-road variant, and a turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain in place of the V6 on the 2023 model that we look at here.
Headlining features include a massive standard 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen and GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving technology. The new Traverse is slated to go on sale shortly, but final details on pricing and fuel economy have yet to be released, so are estimated as noted below.
Aggressive styling
Powerful four-cylinder motor
Huge infotainment display
Lack of a hybrid powertrain
Wants a luxury High Country trim
Others in the segment offer more
A handsome new Chevy crossover
The 2024 Traverse is smaller than before in the powertrain department with a new standard 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine versus the naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 from the last generation. However, the boost does its magic by enabling 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque, gains of 18 and 60, respectively, over the old V6.
This new four-pot is lashed to an 8-speed automatic transmission that spins the front wheels, though AWD is available on the 2024 Traverse. A new off-road-focused Z71 model gets an exclusive twin-clutch AWD system designed for more capability on the trail along with specially tuned dampers, a unique Terrain driving mode, and an extra inch of ground clearance over base models.
With the available trailering package, the 2024 Chevy Traverse can tow up to 5,000 pounds. This is on par with the segment, but off the pace of the 8,700 pounds set by the Dodge Durango that we compare to the Traverse here. Fuel economy figures have yet to be released, but hopefully, they are an improvement over the 21 MPG combined offered by the 2023 Traverse.
Thus far, Chevy has only revealed the maximum cargo capacity for the 2024 Traverse and, at 98 cubic feet, it’s sizable. This new crossover comes standard with 3 rows of seats and room for up to 8 passengers. Z71 and RS models come second-row captain’s thrones, reducing the seat count to 7, but the SmartSlide feature will make it easy to access the wayback.
Upholstery options include cloth, Evotex synthetic leather, and actual leather on top-spec RS trim. Surely climatized front seats and heated rears will be available to be competitive in the segment. A clever new feature to make cabin access easier is the Smart Sense liftgate that opens upon sensing your presence versus having to swing your foot around for a sensor.
Chevy goes wild with infotainment on the new Traverse, fitting every model with a relatively massive 17.7-inch touchscreen that extends from the also-standard 11-inch digital gauge cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also part of the deal. The same is true of subscription-based OnStar, which provides safety, entertainment, convenience, and remote connectivity features, including a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Chevy Safety Assist, the automaker’s bundle of advanced driver aids, includes forward collision mitigation, a lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring with mitigation as standard equipment. Neither the NHTSA nor IIHS have yet to test the 2024 Traverse, but the 2023 AWD model earned a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA with 4 stars for the FWD models.
The entry-level 2024 Traverse LS rides on alloy wheels, has full LED exterior lighting with approach animation, and a true dual exhaust system capped by quad tips that add a touch of sportiness. The cabin is trimmed in black cloth with white contrast stitching and enough bright trim bits to keep things interesting.
There will be available Midnight and Sport Editon packages, but standard equipment includes a fully digital gauge cluster, a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, and wireless smartphone integration. Six USB ports are scattered throughout the cabin and OnStar provides modern levels of connectivity.
LT models are upgraded with roof rails and a hands-free liftgate that automatically opens when it senses the owner’s presence. Black or a black-and-gray two-tone upholstery scheme is available along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. These models also feature a wireless phone charging pad and Super Cruise hands-free driving technology.
In Z71 spec, the 2024 Traverse will ride on a specially tuned suspension and 18-inch black wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber. Other features include front tow hooks, a skid plate, Hill Descent Control, and a wider track plus higher ground clearance than the rest of the lineup.
The cabin treatment consists of black Evotex upholstery with Z71 logos embroidered on the front headrests. Red stitching on the seats plus inlaid panels on the doors and dashboard further the aggressive vibe.
Along with gloss black 22-inch rims, the Traverse RS boasts a sport-tuned suspension said to offer more athletic ride and handling dynamics. Other sporty touches include black exterior trim, debossed badging, and gloss black roof rails.
The RS model also has a dual-panel panoramic moonroof with a power sunshade, black leather upholstery with red accents, and RS logos on the front seat headrests. A special flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel dials up the sportiness, while a one-touch folding 2nd row and power-folding 3rd row add convenience.
A premium Bose audio system will also be included on the Traverse RS and though packaging details are not yet available, optional driver aids include a Safety Alert Seat, a surround-view monitor, intersection automatic emergency braking, a driver attention monitor, and automatic parking assist.
If final pricing is close to these estimated values, the base 2024 Chevy Traverse LS looks like the place to be. For less than $40,000, owners get cutting-edge infotainment equipment and likely access to a full complement of upgrade packages.
That price tag would put it close to a Kia Telluride EX, a leading crossover with amenities like ventilated front seats and of course the 10-year powertrain warranty. The 2024 Traverse warranty remains the same as ever with a 3-year/36,000-mile basic term, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain term, and the first service visit at no charge.

Between the buff new looks, cavernous cabin, giant infotainment screen, and fresh driver aids like bicycle collision mitigation and Super Cruise with trailer coverage and automatic lane change capability, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse appears poised to put the three-row crossover segment on notice.
As this is the inaugural year of the third-generation Traverse, we expect Chevy to bolster the lineup with a more luxurious High Country variant down the road, but until then, I’ll whine about it not being here. And how about a hybrid Chevy?
The Traverse comes standard with front-wheel drive and the option for all-wheel drive.
The 2024 Traverse can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
A 2023 Traverse is rated for 21 mpg combined for FWD models or 20 mpg with AWD, but the 2024 model has not yet been rated.
