The 4th-generation GMC Sierra dates to 2019 and after a mid-cycle refresh in 2022, not much has changed. Largely a carryover model versus the 2024 Sierra, which we review here, GMC has made cruise control a lineup standard feature for 2025 along with fitting a trailer brake controller to the SLE trim and above. A mechanical twin to the Chevy Silverado 1500, this GMC truck trades on a slightly more luxurious level of amenities, particularly in the range-topping Denali Ultimate with its $84,000 starting price.

Diesel fuel economy
Strong base engine
Big towing capacity
Huge sticker prices
Lack of a Raptor competitor
Generally, a huge vehicle
A classier Silverado
In base spec, the 2025 Sierra 1500 comes with a turbocharged 2.7L four-pot making 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque that pairs with an 8-speed automatic. The available 5.3L V8, standard on SLT and Denali models, makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. An optional 6.2L V8 is rated for 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.0L turbodiesel inline-6 – standard on the AT4, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate – comes in at 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque.
These latter three engines all pair with a 10-speed automatic and 4WD is available across the lineup. Unsurprisingly, the diesel is the most fuel-efficient at 26 mpg combined for RWD trucks. The boosted four-cylinder setup comes in at 18 mpg combined, a figure that drops to 16 for the 5.3L V8 and 15 for the 4WD-only 6.2L V8. The Duramax diesel mill is also the towing champ with a rating of 13,300 pounds when properly equipped, though even Sierras with the four-cylinder setup can pull up to 9,500 pounds.
The 2025 Sierra 1500 can be configured in regular, extended, or crew cab with a choice of 5.5-, 6.5-, or 8-foot cargo beds off the back. Regular cabs, with 3 seats, are exclusive to the work-oriented Pro variant with the extended cab available up to Elevation trim. The rest of the Sierra lineup requires a crew cab, which is ideal for hauling up to 6 people as it offers 43 inches of second-row legroom.
Cabin features are equally diverse on the latest Sierra, ranging from vinyl floors and seats on Pro models to full-grain leather with heating, cooling, and massaging on the high-dollar Denali Ultimate. Crew cab models offer folding rear seatbacks for cabin storage, while the cargo bed comes with an array of adjustable tie-down points. As for passenger comfort, heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control are standard on the SLE trim line and above.
Aside from the base Pro model with its 7” central touchscreen, the 2025 Sierra lineup features a 13.4” display along with a fully digital gauge cluster. All models are equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot and multiple USB ports. Audiophiles should look to the Bose 7-speaker system on Denalis or the 12-speaker setup on the Denali Ultimate.
GMC fits all 2025 Sierra 1500 models with forward collision mitigation, a lane-keeping system, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert show up on Denali models and Super Cruise is available via a package or as part of the Denali Ultimate trim line that includes a 3-year subscription. In crash testing, the NHTSA rated the 2025 Sierra 5 stars for overall safety, its highest score.
The worksite-styled Sierra Pro comes with 17” steel wheels, LED headlights, and a vinyl-lined cabin. Tech highlights include a 6-speaker audio system and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The $10,000 jump in price to an SLE is justified with alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, GMC’s trailering package content, and an auto-locking rear differential. These trucks also boast a heated steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, Google built-in, and dual 120-volt power outlets.
Elevation trim leans into the street truck arena with a monochromatic exterior finish, LED fog lights, and gloss black-finished 20” wheels.
In SLT guise, the 2025 Sierra features 18” wheels, the MultiPro tailgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, leather upholstery, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Denali models up the ritz with 20” rims, adaptive dampers to bust the rough-riding truck myth, heated rear outboard seats, climatized front seats, a wireless phone charging pad, and parking sensors at both ends.
Designed for off-roading, the Sierra AT4 rides on a 2” factory suspension lift and features skid plates, all-terrain tires, Hill Descent Control, standard 4WD, and red recovery hooks.
Those looking to hit the trails extra hard should look to the AT4X model with its locking differentials front and rear as well as high-end Multimatic spool-valve damper
The Denali Ultimate trim line is loaded with 22” wheels, Vader Chrome trim, power-deployable running boards, and a Kicker audio system within the tailgate. Other highlights include a sunroof, a surround-view monitor, a head-up display, and a digital rearview mirror.
The GMC Sierra SLE is easy to recommend given its desirable features like heated front seats and the 13.4” infotainment display for a relatively low price. But you could spend about $5,000 less for a Chey Silverado Custom. It won’t have the same size touchscreen, but it does come with the exact same powertrain for a lot less. GMC’s warranty includes 3 years of basic coverage, a 5-year powertrain term, and one free oil change on the house.

All by itself, the 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 is a very nice truck with plenty of powertrains to choose from, all three traditional cab configurations, and serious towing capacity. It also offers everything from a fairly basic work truck to a fairly fancy Denali Ultimate. However, it’s hard to get too excited given the existence of its Chevy Silverado corporate cousin. The Chevy can’t quite match the Denali Ultimate for accoutrements, but on nearly every other front, the Silverado offers similar features for less money. Laser-etched open-pore wood is certainly nice, but the price points on the Silverado are nicer.
The 2025 Sierra 1500 can tow up to 13,300 pounds.
The crew cab has the largest cabin space of any Sierra 1500.
The 2025 Sierra Denali starts at $67,395, but the Denali Ultimate stickers at $84,190 to start.
