Big and brawny, the 2024 Toyota Sequoia sits atop the automaker’s SUV lineup with 3 rows of seating and a potent hybrid powertrain. After 15 long years, the 3rd-gen Sequoia arrived last year fully modernized and ready to compete in the full-size SUV segment.
For the 2024 model year, Toyota has added a Nightshade package to the Limited model that incorporates a black finish on the wheels, fenders, badges, and more. Also new is a TRD Off-Road package for the Platinum trim that brings tuned Bilstein dampers, an electronically-locking rear differential, and Crawl Control. And exclusive to the TRD Pro variant is a new brick-red Terra paint finish.

Every 2024 Sequoia features a hybrid powertrain that consists of a twin-turbo 3.4L V6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission with a battery-powered electric motor mounted between the two. This sandwich of Toyota engineering, known as the “i-Force Max”, puts out 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque that is routed to the rear wheels. Part-time 4WD is a $3,000 option for all models except the TRD Pro on which it is standard.
This setup, in 2WD, offers 21 mpg city and 24 mpg highway or 22 mpg combined. That may not sound like much, but consider the gas-guzzling Nissan Armada offers just 16 mpg combined and Toyota’s decision to skip a big ol’ V8 makes a lot more sense. The 4×4 Sequoia comes in at 19 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
As for towing capability, the latest Sequoia tops out at 9,520 pounds in base SR5 guise. This is a relatively huge step up over the prior Sequoia that could manage just 7,400 pounds. Certainly, the solid rear axle helps in this department, though it puts the hurt on handling and interior packaging. But those who regularly haul big things will appreciate the standard trailer brake controller and trailer sway control systems.
Toyota offers everything from cloth and “SofTex” leatherette to regular and semi-aniline leather on the new Sequoia. Heated and power-adjustable front seats are standard with conveniences like a power-folding third row and climatized front and rear seats all available as you climb the trim ladder. Eight people can fit with the second-row bench or you can opt for captain’s chairs if seven spaces is enough.
As for cargo room, the 2024 Sequoia comes up surprisingly short. Though the overall vehicle measures 3 inches longer than 2nd-gen models, the latest Sequoia tops out at 86.9 cubic feet of cargo space.
That last version could swallow 120 cubes and the Nissan Armada, which we compare to the Sequoia here, can handle 95 cubes. This is still a whole lot of interior space and the 2024 Sequoia is certainly comfortable, but the hybrid battery pack and solid rear axle aren’t doing it any favors in this department.
As for technology, the 2024 Sequoia is quite impressive. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard as are a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, a surround-view monitor, and the full complement of Toyota’s connected services. Only the base SR5 model comes with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, the rest of the lineup sports a huge 14 incher. It’s this generous level of standard tech that earned the Sequoia a spot on our list of best full-size SUVs.
Neither the NHTSA nor IIHS have performed crash-testing on the Sequoia, but Toyota includes its Safety Sense suite of advanced safety systems on all 2024 models. This bundle includes forward collision mitigation, a lane-keeping system, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. There is also Safety Connect tech, which brings automatic collision notification and an SOS feature to the Sequoia.
The entry-level Sequoia SR5 rides on 18-inch wheels and has a moonroof, full LED exterior lighting, and passive entry. Cabin amenities include soft-touch surfaces, cloth upholstery, a heated front row, and triple-zone automatic climate control. A fully digital gauge cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring headline the tech systems along with an 8-speaker stereo system and parking sonar front and rear.
Limited models bring 20-inch rims, a power liftgate, leatherette upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and climatized front seats. From here on up, a 14-inch infotainment interface, 2nd and 3rd-row sunshades, and a power-folding 3rd row are all included.
Upgraded LED headlights with sequential turn signals, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a panoramic moonroof all set the Platinum model apart. Other niceties include leather upholstery, a climatized 2nd row, and ambient cabin lighting. Tech systems are upgraded with a digital rearview mirror, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, and 120-volt power outlets for the 2nd row and cargo hold.
You can’t miss the Capstone with its chrome embellishments, big 22s, and auto-deploying running boards. Real wood trim and two-tone leather grace the interior, which also features a head-up display. Tacking on 4WD, a fancy paint job, and a couple of options balloons the sticker to nearly $85,000 – so check out the latest new car incentives first.
For serious off-roading, the Sequoia TRD Pro model sports extra LED lighting outside, 33-inch all-terrain rubber, an aluminum front skid plate, more ground clearance, a locking rear differential, and trick Fox dampers with remote reservoirs. Crawl Control and a Multi-Terrain Monitor add more capability, while the matte-black BBS wheels and red cabin accent just look cool.
None of the 2024 Toyota Sequoia models could be considered cheap, but the Limited model comes in under $70,000 and offers a tremendous array of creature comforts to go with the giant-sized touchscreen, making it a decent value. Chevy’s Tahoe in Premier trim makes for a good counterpoint as it offers a similar blend of features for the price while adding a far larger cargo hold and the option for semi-autonomous driving tech.
Toyota’s warranty is industry-average for the 3-year/36,000-mile vehicle coverage and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage. But it also includes 2 years of complimentary maintenance, which is not the case with all competitors, and a 10-year warranty on the hybrid battery pack.

Overall, the 2024 Toyota Sequoia has a lot going for it – brawny looks, a killer powertrain that is relatively fuel efficient, big-time towing figures, and a high level of technology. However, the solid rear axle and hybrid system that enable some of these attributes come at a cost to interior space and handling.
At the lower end of the trim scale, the Sequoia is a more competitive full-size SUV. But as you creep into $80,000 territory, it becomes less appealing in the face of competitors like a Chevrolet Tahoe or Ford Expedition.
The 2024 Sequoia starts at $62,725 for a base SR5 model on up to $80,560 for a top-spec TRD Pro version.
