Reviving a Blue Oval nameplate last seen as a 1970s car, the 2022 Ford Maverick is an all-new compact pickup truck that features plenty of pickup capability without the oversized proportions of an F-150 or Ranger. The Maverick leans green with a standard hybrid powertrain that can hit 42 mpg in the city. A turbocharged gas-powered motor is also available along with AWD and the ability to tow up to 4,000 pounds. Ford spent a fair amount of time on ensuring Swiss Army-like versatility for the cargo bed to pull in the active lifestyle crowd. There is a nice level of standard tech on hand while the top-spec models blend utility with style and a dash of luxury.

2022 Ford Maverick Powertrain
Ford’s hybrid-first approach to the 2022 Ford Maverick means a combination 2.5L inline-4 and dual AC motors with 1.1 kWh battery pack is the standard powertrain. It uses a CVT to power the front wheels only, making a system total 191 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. If you want more power and access to AWD, you’ll need the optional 2.0L EcoBoost, a turbocharged affair packing 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque paired with a traditional 8-speed automatic. The EcoBoost tacks on about $1100 with AWD adding an additional $3300 to any trim.
All Mavericks come with the ability to choose between pre-programmed drive modes classified as Normal, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Eco, and Sport. When equipped with the FX4 Off-Road package, a Mud & Ruts as well as Sand mode are included. This package runs $800 and requires the EcoBoost motor and AWD configuration. All-terrain tires wrapping unique 17” wheels, skid plates, tuned shocks and exposed front tow hooks are fitted and Hill Descent Control is on hand all in the name of rough road capability.
Towing & Payload
An AWD Maverick with the EcoBoost motor can lug up to 4,000 pounds when equipped with the 4K Tow Pack, which brings a transmission oil cooler, higher capacity radiator, additional upgraded components, and a trailer brake controller. Payload tops out at 1,500 pounds and hybrid models can tow as much as 2,000 pounds. The 2022 Ford Maverick 4.5-foot-long cargo bed can handle up to 18 sheets of 4’ x 8’, ¾” plywood without having to load at an angle. However, the multi-position tailgate does just that if needed by locking at roughly 45° angle. Named FLEXBED, the cargo area comes with up to 10 tie-down points, available 12V pre-wired connections, and 110V power as well as configurable cargo divider slots.
